Interpreter ideology: ‘Editing’ discourse in simultaneous interpreting
This study investigates empirically the way in which interpreter ideology is manifested in the evaluative language of the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in China in 2016 (English–Chinese language pair). Methodologically, van Dijk’s Ideological Square and Martin and White’s Appraisal framework have been operationalised for the analysis of positive or negative evaluative language in ‘us’ vs ‘them’ discourses. The results reveal an overall po…

Evaluation in Translation: Critical Points of Translator Decision-Making
In this book, Jeremy Munday presents advances towards a general theory of evaluation in translator decision-making that will be of high importance to translator and interpreter training and to descriptive translation analysis. By ‘evaluation’ the author refers to how a translator’s subjective stance manifests itself linguistically in a text. In a world where translation and interpreting function as a prism through which opposing personal and poli…

Translation Theory, which includes a description of several new and important anthologies of writings on …

More specifically, it explores the use of the potential of appraisal theory of evaluation (Martin, J.R., & White, P.R.R., The Language of Evaluation: Appraisal in English. London: Palgrave, 2005), centring on the realization of interpersonal meaning, for the uncovering of translator decision-making. The analysis is applied to a case study …
