  • Arguments for exception in US security discourse

    Open Access•Duncan Hunter, D R Hunter et al.•ARTICLE•Discourse & Society•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 3

In his influential State of Exception, Giorgio Agamben proposes that, even in apparently liberal western democracies, the state will routinely use the contingency of national emergency to suspend civil liberties and justify expansion of military and police powers. We investigated rhetorical strategies deployed in the web pages of US security agencies, created or reformed in the aftermath of the 9/11 events, to determine whether they present argum…

  • The discourse of Olympic security

    Open Access•Malcolm N Macdonald, Duncan Hunter et al.•ARTICLE•Discourse & Society•2013•Cited by: 6•References: 16

This article uses a combination of critical discourse analysis (CDA) and corpus linguistics (CL) to investigate the discursive realization of the security operation for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Drawing on Didier Bigo’s (2008) conceptualization of the ‘ban-opticon’, it addresses two questions: (1) What distinctive linguistic features are used in documents relating to security for London 2012? (2) How is Olympic security realized as a discurs…

  • Citizenship, community, and counter-terrorism

Malcolm N Macdonald, Duncan Hunter et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Politics•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 23

This paper analyses a corpus of UK policy documents which sets out national security policy as an exemplar of the contemporary discourse of counter-terrorism in Europe, the USA and worldwide. A corpus of 148 documents (c. 2.8 million words) was assembled to reflect the security discourse produced by the UK government before and after the 7/7 attacks on the London Transport system. To enable a chronological comparison, the two sub-corpora were def…

  • Limitations of Epidemiologically Based Needs Assessment

    Colin F B Sanderson, Colin Sanderson et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1997•References: 39

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to make epidemiologically based estimates of the prevalent and incident "need" for prostatectomy for lower urinary tract symptoms, defined as the numbers of men who would both benefit from and want the operation. METHODS: The methods involved a consensus panel, a two-stage postal survey of 1,480 men aged 55 years or older from eight general practices to the northwest of London, United Kingdom, and a multistat…

  • Qualitative Research

    Open Access•Jeremy Jones, Duncan Hunter•ARTICLE•BMJ•1995

Health providers face the problem of trying to make decisions in situations where there is insufficient information and also where there is an overload of (often contradictory) information. Statistical methods such as meta-analysis have been developed to summarise and to resolve inconsistencies in study findings--where information is available in an appropriate form. Consensus methods provide another means of synthesising information, but are lia…
