  • Music cues impact the emotionality but not richness of episodic memory retrieval

Open Access•Kelly Jakubowski, Dana Walker et al.•ARTICLE•Memory•2023

Previous studies have found that music evokes more vivid and emotional memories of autobiographical events than various other retrieval cues. However, it is possible such findings can be explained by pre-existing differences between disparate events that are retrieved in response to each cue type. To test whether music exhibits differential effects to other cues even when memory encoding is controlled, we compared music and environmental sounds a…

  • Developing the imagination within funds of identity

Dana Walker, José L Lalueza et al.•ARTICLE•Mind Culture and Activity•2021

This paperargues for the development of the imagination experientially, pedagogically, and theoretically within the funds of identity approach. Our discussion is based on findings from a year-long ethnographic study of a Transnational Youth Radio project. The analysis centers on the case of 13-year old Muhammad in the context of his school-based Barcelona radio program. We present two examples from his case that illuminate the potential and chall…

  • Can We Prepare Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Teachers Online? A Cross-Case Analysis of Online and On-Campus Courses

    Open Access•Dana Walker, Elizabeth Mahon et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Education•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 33

Using a cross-case analysis of online, on-campus and online university teacher preparation courses, this study critically examines the constraints and affordances of online teacher education in preparing teachers for culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) urban schools. The results of the study indicate that while there was no significant difference between online and on-campus courses in terms of teacher acquisition of knowledge related to …

  • Getting our spirits out’, letting youth spirits and life worlds into the classroom through youth radio arts for transnational students

    Dana Walker•ARTICLE•Ethnography & Education•2018•References: 9

This paper analyses the cultural practices that were introduced in a radio improv class on the first day of Youth Radio Arts for immigrant students, and how these practices served as resources to mediate students’ understanding of, and realisation of ‘voice’ over time. The theory-method combines insights from interactional ethnography and postmodern approaches to multilingual language ecologies. The analysis focuses on speech body play, parody, a…

    Brian T Fisher, Tracey Harris et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2014•References: 2

BACKGROUND: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) accounts for almost one quarter of pediatric cancer in the United States. Despite cooperative group therapeutic trials, there remains a paucity of large cohort data on which to conduct epidemiology and comparative effectiveness research studies. RESEARCH DESIGN: We designed a 3-step process utilizing International Classification of Diseases-9 Clinical Modification (ICD-9) discharge diagnoses codes an…

  • Ethical dilemmas in representation

    Deborah Romero, Dana Walker•ARTICLE•Ethnography & Education•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 10

This paper reflects upon the ways that multi-modal data and student productions enhance and challenge our methodologies and ethical commitments in our collaborative critical ethnographic research in youth media. We review recent research and theory related to multi-modal representations and we critically explore how our data are produced, including how claims are represented and substantiated in the findings. We consider, through specific example…

  • The Location of Digital Ethnography

    Open Access•Dana Walker, Dana M Walker•ARTICLE•Cosmopolitan Civil Societies An…•2010•Cited by: 2

Qualitative researchers interested in digitally-located social and cultural practices have struggled with ways in which to design studies that can account for the digital aspect of cultural practices while also taking into account that those digital practices do not exist as separate (or separable in terms of our research) from other social and cultural practices. As such, one of the primary and ongoing challenges facing internet-based ethnograph…

  • When ‘literacy is a bennie’

    Dana Walker, Deborah Romero•ARTICLE•Ethnography & Education•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 5

This paper presents findings from an innovative school-based youth radio project for Mexican immigrant students. We draw on ethnographic and discourse data collected over an academic year, including multiple data representations from video and audio recordings, radio production artefacts, interviews, and still images. We begin our discussion with a close analysis of a rich moment in the project brought-on by the collision of divergent and contest…

  • Boundary-Crossing Competence

Dana Walker, Honorine Nocon•ARTICLE•Mind Culture and Activity•2007

This article provides a conceptual account and empirical analyses of the development of boundary-crossing competence—the ability to function competently in multiple contexts—using representative cases from two after-school programs with immigrant and low-socioeconomic status students. Our findings suggest that organizational designs that create networks of related communities of practice can provide opportunities for nondominant students to devel…
