  • From Factory to Community

Open Access•Yun Gao, Nwakaego Onyenokporo et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Science•2026

The construction industry is characterised by high raw materials consumption and large waste generation. Upcycling waste construction materials offers an opportunity to reduce embodied carbon emissions while creating community assets. This paper examines how integrated design supports the effective reuse of waste materials from a modular building factory through the design of a community garden pavilion. Using Whole Lifecycle Assessment, the carb…

  • Emerging and sustaining infrastructures of care

Arora, Vanicka Arora et al.•ARTICLE•Local Environment•2026

In this commentary, we examine the concept of “infrastructures of care”, exploring how they emerge and are sustained through academic-practitioner collaborations in the context of climate action and sustainability. Drawing on our experiences of workshop-based collaboration, we argue that beyond disciplinary alignments and institutional agendas, a sharing of ethical commitments is central to fostering meaningful and long-term collaboration and par…

  • Living Through Fieldwork Duration

    Open Access•Mary Adkins-Cartee, Manas Murthy et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•2026

This conceptual paper examines assumptions about time latent in traditional qualitative fieldwork. It draws on the work of Bergson, Campt, Kirby, Manning, and Phillips to enact a concept of fieldwork duration . Fieldwork duration is a co-constitution of seemingly disparate spacetimes that emerge in haptic (touching) relation. Fieldwork duration pushes beyond traditional ideas of “the field” being “out there” somewhere and the time of fieldwork as…

  • Cycling as work

    Open Access•Manas Murthy, Malini Sur•ARTICLE•Mobilities•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 41

Set against the marginalization of cycling in Kolkata and Delhi, this article shows how cargo-cyclists and cycle rickshaw pullers make productive contributions to urban economies and negotiate constraints to their mobility in Indian cities. As cheap vehicles, bicycles and cycle rickshaws not only provide opportunities for social and economic mobility, but also contribute to, generate, and sustain vital urban economies. Cycle workers ensure the sm…
