Swat in the Ashmolean
Since its rediscovery in the context of nineteenth-century colonial India, the study of the ancient Buddhist sculpture of Gandhara (northern Pakistan) has been hampered by very limited information about the provenance of finds. This is the result of poorly documented expeditions by archaeologists and antiquarians, as much as the enduring appeal of classically-influenced Gandharan art to collectors. The present study casts light on the modern itin…
Tracking (In)Justice
There is a lack of knowledge on deaths related to police use of force across Canada. Tracking (In)Justice is a research project that is trying to make sense of the life and death outcomes of policing through developing a collaborative, interdisciplinary, and open-source database using publicly available sources. With a collaborative data governance approach, which includes communities most impacted and families of those killed by police, we docum…
The Use of Tele-Education in Medicine, During and Beyond the Covid-19 Pandemic
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a disease caused by a novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), emerged initially as an isolated illness in December 2019 and later progressed to a global pandemic. Hard-hit areas were lockdown, massively disrupting medical education activities. Tele-education, previously used as a means of long-distance education emerged as a solution in the field of medical education. Tele-rotations…
The grey zones of antiquarian pursuits
This article discusses and analyses the Barger archaeological expedition of 1938 to the princely state of Swat. It argues that archaeology in princely, as well as in British, India did not originate and develop in a unilinear manner. This understanding is in line with the recent realization of variations in the historiography of native India. Given this, an attempt has been made to situate the Swat state in relation to British paramountcy. Miangu…
Politics of quantifying people and 2017’s census of Pakistan
Between Independence and Autonomy
Since its inception, Pakistan has faced challenges of ethnic-nationalism from her ethnicities. State efforts to mold these diverse identities into one communal Muslim identity have been continually resisted by the different nationalities comprising Pakistan. The demands of ethno-national movements have fluctuated between independence and autonomy, depending upon the relation between the state and the respective ethnic group. Sometimes the demand …
The rise of peripheral nationalism in Pakistan and the Pashtun Tahafuz movement
Pakistan is facing a robust wave of nationalism in the shape of the Pashtun Tahafuz (protection) movement. It is not the first time Pakistan is experiencing the outburst of a peripheral nationalist movement. Since the inception of Pakistan in 1947, it has been confronting the multiple challenges stemming out from the ethnic movements. Pakistan was fragmented in 1971 at the hands of the Bengali sub-nationalist movement. The separatist demands in S…
In the Shadows of Swords. The Antecedents of the Archaeological Research in Malakand-Swat, 1895–1899
This paper deals with the formative years of archaeological research in Malakand-Swat, Khyber-Pukhtunkhwa. Recent archival material sheds light not only on the central role Major Harold A. Deane, the first Political Agent of the newly constituted Malakand Agency (1895), played in these pursuits but also brings to the fore an institutional context, such as museums and other learned societies. The Bengal Government’s delegations, led by Laurence A.…
In Pursuit of Pre-/Protohistory
This paper adds to the history of Indian archaeology a new chapter. It discusses and analyzes Simone Corbiau’s archaeological expedition to North-West Frontier Province and the Malakand Political Agency in 1938. Corbiau was a Belgian archaeologist having interest in pre-/protohistoric terracottas. In the first place, we give a scholarly background to her research so as to understand the importance of the work. In the early 1930s, D.H. Gordon publ…
Sacrality Continues
This paper argues the presence of syncretistic Islam in Swat valley, Pakistan. The present Swati society, though dominantly Muslim, is the result of vital historical processes which is reflected in the rich cultural heritage of the valley. Some historical problems have not been well studied so far due to scare evidence. One such problem is the history of Vajrayānic/Tantric Buddhism of the area. Insufficient archaeological data and written record …
