A History of Korea
Su-kyoung Hwang. Korea’s Grievous War
Multiple variants of the word “grief” drive Su-kyoung Hwang’s meticulous, gripping study of anti-communist, state-sanctioned mass killings in Korea during the mid-twentieth century. This period indeed witnessed a horrific, grievous convergence of deeply rooted civil conflicts among Koreans and the budding Cold War that received an injection of heated savagery through the Korean War of 1950–1953. While detailing and contextualizing the commission …
Rationalizing Korea
The first book to explore the institutional, ideological, and conceptual development of the modern state on the peninsula, Rationalizing Korea analyzes the state’s relationship to five social sectors, each through a distinctive interpretive theme: economy (developmentalism), religion (secularization), education (public schooling), population (registration), and public health (disease control). Kyung Moon Hwang argues that while this formative pro…

Nation, State and the Modern Transformation of Korean Social Structure in the Early Twentieth Century
When assessing social change in modern Korea, the tremendous material transformation of the second half of the twentieth century has tended to obscure the advances of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This article examines the distinctive means by which both nation building and state making contributed to the formation of Korea's modern social structure well before the full advent of industrialisation and urbanisation. It argues …
Beyond Birth
The social structure of contemporary Korea contains strong echoes of the hierarchical principles and patterns governing stratification in the Chosŏn dynasty (1392–1910): namely, birth and one’s position in the bureaucracy. At the beginning of Korea’s modern era, the bureaucracy continued to exert great influence, but developments undermined, instead of reinforced, aristocratic dominance. Furthermore, these changes elevated the secondary status gr…
Citizenship, Social Equality and Government Reform
For over a millennium before the 20th century, the Korean state had maintained a system of household registration, or hojok. In the Choson dynasty (1392-1910), these registers, through their specification of each household head's status either as a tax-paying commoner or tax-exempt aristocrat or low-born, reinforced the hereditary status delineation of each locality and in turn determined everything from tax and service obligations to the courtes…
Contentious Kwangju
One of the largest political protests in contemporary Korean history, the May 1980 Kwangju Uprising still exerts a profound, often contested, influence in Korean society. Through a deft combination of personal reflections and academic analysis, Contentious Kwangju offers a comprehensive examination of the multiple, shifting meanings of this seminal event and explains how the memory of Kwangju has affected Korean life from politics to culture. The…

Country or State? Reconceptualizing Kukka in the Korean Enlightenment Period, 1896-1910
The Korean enlightenment period, 1896--1910, was characterized by intellectual experimentation and adaptation, as the leading intellectuals attempted to reconcile the new ideas and models originating from the West, as well as from contemporary Japan and China, with the very powerful equivalents from the Korean-Confucian tradition, and in constant consideration of the circumstances of the day. This study examines a key example of the reformulation…
