  • Navigating cultural intimacies: Long-lasting friendships in the Scottish South Asian diasporas

    Open Access•Shruti Chaudhry•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•2025•References: 10

In research on the UK’s South Asian communities, the family has generally been taken to be a ‘self-fulfilling’ unit and the existence of friendships within and across these communities remains empirically unexplored and conceptually under-theorised. This is even more so the case for friendships among older South Asians. This article therefore explores the workings of decades-long friendships of the Scottish South Asian diasporas, particularly tho…

  • Mid- and Later Life Cross-Sex Friendships in Minority Ethnic Contexts: Insights From Scotland

    Open Access•Shruti Chaudhry•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 20

This article draws on qualitative research among older adults (50+ years) of South Asian heritage in Scotland to explore what cross-sex friendships reveal about the normative tenor of gender, sexualities, and intimate relationships in minority ethnic contexts. I argue that South Asian cultural norms work against the 'patterning' and maintenance of cross-sex friendships. When they do occur, they have to be managed with regard to familial ties and …

  • For how Long can your Pīharwāle Intervene: Accessing natal kin support in rural North India

    Open Access•Shruti Chaudhry•ARTICLE•Modern Asian Studies•2019•Cited by: 6•References: 27

Based on ethnographic fieldwork in rural Uttar Pradesh, this article contributes to debates on married women's relations with their natal kin. It compares women in 'regional' marriages (which conform to caste and community norms with a relatively small marriage distance) with women in 'cross-regional' marriages (those that cross caste, linguistic, and state boundaries, and entail long-distance migration). A focus on cross-regional marriage demons…

  • Flexible’ caste boundaries: Cross-regional marriage as mixed marriage in rural north India

    Shruti Chaudhry•ARTICLE•Contemporary South Asia•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 21

Based on ethnographic fieldwork in a village in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, this article focuses on cross-regional marriage (those that cross caste and linguistic boundaries and entail long-distance migration) as mixed marriage. It queries the ‘acceptance’ of women sought beyond traditional boundaries of caste in a context where caste endogamy is the norm and breaches are otherwise not tolerated. It argues that while the caste of the…

Open Access•Shruti Chaudhry, Taneesha Mohan et al.•ARTICLE•Indian Journal of Gender Studies•2011•Cited by: 11•References: 7

This article focuses on long-distance or cross-regional marriages in a village in Badaun District of Uttar Pradesh where brides have migrated from the states of West Bengal and Bihar. These marriages cross caste, linguistic and state boundaries and the marriage distance exceeds 1,000 kilometres. At destination, it is a combination of factors such as landlessness or marginal landownership, higher age or prior marital status and ‘flawed’ reputation…
