Speaking of virtue ethics
Much of the contemporary virtue ethics literature draws upon interpretations of the moral philosophy of the ancients, particularly Aristotle, who discussed virtue ethics primarily in terms of four concepts: arete, phronesis, eudaimonia and, to a lesser degree, schole. However, modern discourse on virtue ethics typically utilizes only three of these concepts in present-day incarnations: virtue, prudence, and happiness. Leisure no longer appears as…
The science behind Europe's music scale
Europe's first music scale was set out by Pythagoras some two and a half thousand years ago. It conformed to the algebraic theorem that two conditions can be satisfied with two variables, for its two sizes of tone were chosen to produce perfect octaves and perfect fifths. Pythagoras also discovered the simple definition of these concordant intervals as the ratios of the lengths of the vibrating strings which produce them, the ratios being 2/1, 3/…

British Finance and Foreign Policy in Turkey
It was often difficult in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to distinguish the interests of European financiers and concession holders operating overseas from the political policies of their respective governments. Concessions from a weak regime, in regions where political disorder and economic hardship were apparent, gave the power which held them a basis for the development of political influence in the country; and a basis too …
The Foreign Office and the First Chinese Indemnity Loan, 1895
In the 1890s the concept of laissez-faire still dominated the attitude of the Foreign Office to the question of overseas loans and investment. Unlike its European counterparts, the British Government had no tradition of interference in the world of high finance, nor were there any formal channels of communication between die City and the Foreign Office whereby a community of interests might be established or policies correlated. In the mid-ninete…
Chinese Railways and the Townley Agreement of 1903
British financial interests in China, since 1895, had been closely linked with political and strategic considerations. As the political and financial rivalry between the European powers intensified, the link tightened, becoming increasingly essential for mutual preservation. European finance meant railways, mineral rights, arms, and support for the ailing Manchu Dynasty; it was clear to successive British governments that British political suprem…
