Emotional Arenas: Life, Love, and Death in 1870s Italy
Based on the records of a murder trial that transfixed the nation, this book is a social history of 1870s Italy that develops a new paradigm for the history of emotions - the ‘emotional arena’. The decade following Italian unification formed a context of notable cultural variety and fluidity, and the experience and expression of emotions could be as variable as the regions making up the new nation. Through a close examination of a range of specif…

Comunità omosessuali. Le scienze sociali sulla popolazione LGBT
The relative paucity of research on sexualities in Italy makes this edited volume worth knowing about for anyone with an interest in the subject. The book collects research presented at a major con

Faultlines: Cohesion and Division in Modern Europe
A century ago, the opening of the First World War marked the beginning of a new era of European experience. For more than three decades after the July crisis of 1914, the continent was torn apart by wars, revolutions, political upheavals and depressions. To contemporaries it seemed that the nineteenth-century age of relative peace and limited war had passed for good. The paradox of modern European history's barbaric wars and high civilisations wa…

Lorenzo Benadusi. The Enemy of the New Man: Homosexuality in Fascist Italy
This translation of Lorenzo Benadusi's landmark book, first published in Italian in 2005, is a welcome addition to the history of fascism, modern Italy, and sexual politics. When Italian criminal law was unified in 1889, lawmakers opted not to criminalize homosexual acts. Benadusi stresses that the decision did not reflect toleration or enlightenment so much as an Italian preference to avoid creating discursive channels that might promote awarene…
Introduction: Italy and the emotions
Characterised as the country of gestural expressiveness and animated verbal exchanges, of Latin lovers and of operatic excess, Italy has long been seen as a domain of emotional intensity. However, this association between Italy and the emotions has tended to remain a matter for popular imagination and stereotypical representations, and it is only recently that the question of emotions has started to become a focus for scholarly investigation. Thi…
Emotional arenas: From provincial circus to national courtroom in late nineteenth-century Italy
This article investigates a revealing moment in Italian history, during which a court of law in Rome became a complex arena of emotions. Building on Barbara Rosenwein's concept of ‘emotional communities', the analysis presents the trial as an episode in which divergent communities' styles were adjudicated as part of an attempt to establish more uniform emotional standards for a relatively new polity. The murder victim, a circumspect official base…
Introduction: Perspectives on Garibaldi and Italian unity
One hundred and fifty years ago, in October 1860, the legendary dawn meeting at Teano between Giuseppe Garibaldi and Victor Emmanuel of Piedmont marked a momentary confluence of competing visions of Italian unification. Although the moment represented an ideological about-face for Garibaldi, his status as the most luminous hero of Italian unification continued to rise like a serene spirit, seemingly untainted by the contested realities of the nat…

Epistolary emotions: Exploring amorous hinterlands in 1870s southern Italy
Drawing upon a chance find of a cache of love-letters penned by Italian women in the late nineteenth century, this article investigates an emotional landscape that is rarely documented in the archives: the amorous feelings of ordinary women. The writers were anonymous, literate and presumably fairly well-to-do women from various regions in the southern half of Italy. Each of them had an intensely emotional correspondence with a man who toured the…

Debating Divorce in Italy: Marriage and the Making of Modern Italians, 1860–1974
The popular referendum of 1974 which affirmed Italy's recently-won divorce law is widely regarded as a turning point in modern Italian history, but the long story behind that struggle has remained lar
Keystone of the patriarchal family? Indissoluble marriage, masculinity and divorce in Liberal Italy
While divorce laws were introduced in most of western Europe in the second half of the nineteenth century, the majority of Italian statesmen exhibited strong reluctance to take such a measure on the occasions it was proposed by a number of progressive parliamentarians between unification and 1920. This essay examines the debates over whether or not to introduce a divorce law during Italy's Liberal period, arguing that many Italians saw indissolub…
