  • Why bad things happen to bad people

    Open Access•Louis Bayman, Louis David Bayman•ARTICLE•Open Screens•2022

This essay explores the idea of evil through its relationship to ideas of justice and representations of suffering. It does so to consider the particularity of the giallo genre both in relation to the wider detective and horror genres of which it is a hybrid, and to the development of Italian cinema in the post-war decades. In its delirious depictions of a hellish modernity the giallo overturns faith both in Catholic tradition and in reason. By r…

  • L'Italia di Fellini. Immagini, paesaggi, forme di vita

    Open Access•Louis Bayman•ARTICLE•Modern Italy•2022

In 1993, a few months before his death, the veteran film director Federico Fellini was invited to the University of Bologna to receive an honorary doctorate. Bologna, the oldest modern university in the world, wished to bestow on Fellini its institutional recognition of his half a century in the Italian film industry. Not unflattered, Fellini declined, and wrote to the rector of the university that he felt ‘like Pinocchio being decorated by the h…

  • Francesco Pitassio, Neorealist Film Culture 1945–1954

    Open Access•Louis Bayman•ARTICLE•Screen•2020

Barely has the afterglow subsided from the celebration of 70 years since the first appearance of neorealism in the wreckage of the postwar Italian film industry,1 than the heralds of its 75th anniversary appear.2 This recurrent urge to commemorate neorealism suggests that the movement acts to remind scholars that film once had a heroic phase, as an art form with a previously unparalleled public importance. Yet sceptics might be forgiven for consi…

  • Can there be a Progressive Nostalgia? Layering Time in Pride’s Retro-Heritage

    Open Access•Louis Bayman•ARTICLE•Open Library of Humanities•2019

Pride is notable for its dynamic treatment of time, which is key both to its appeal as a film and to its presentation of the processes of political change. By combining nostalgia, retro, and heritage, Pride manifests an artistic practice I refer to as temporal layering, which draws attention to how any single moment implies potential relationships with numerous interacting others. I use this notion to understand both the role that the 1984–5 mine…

  • Ivo Blom, Reframing Luchino Visconti

    Open Access•Louis Bayman•ARTICLE•Screen•2018

It was an Italian writer, Ricciotto Canudo, who in 1911 proclaimed cinema to be not only the ‘sixth art’ but a synthesis of the others.1 One could suggest Luchino Visconti as the practical realization of this theory, for the starting point for this new, highly detailed and very rich study by Ivo Blom is that Visconti’s cinema represents the Gesamtkunstwerk, or total work of art, the name given by Richard Wagner (who appears as a character in Visc…

Louis Bayman•BOOK•The Operatic and the Everyday in…•2014

After the war audiences filled Italian cinemas to watch films of passion and pathos. This book elucidates the insight they give into a post-war society between war and economic miracle, and examines their status as mass products f…
