  • Collective self-build for senior friendly communities. Studying the effects on social cohesion, social satisfaction and loneliness

Open Access•Paul Van Den Berg, Julie Sanders et al.•ARTICLE•Housing Studies•2023•References: 45

Neighbourhood social cohesion is important for the health and well-being of the ageing population. It is therefore crucial to study how we can create neighbourhoods with high levels of neighbourhood social cohesion where senior citizens can age in place. We test the hypotheses that collective self-build is positively related to social cohesion and (directly and indirectly) to social satisfaction and lower levels of loneliness. The study is based …

Engaging and stimulating, this Introduction provides a fresh vista of the early modern theatrical landscape. • Geographies of Performance in the Early Modern Midlands

    Open Access•Julie Sanders•CHAPTER•Performing Environments•2014

As site-specific theory is increasingly brought to bear within historicized contexts, early modern household performances and court masques as theatrical subgenres have benefited hugely from the attention to moment, event and venue that this work has enabled. However, by thinking about site-specific performances not solely in terms of hermetically sealed one-off occasional events, we can also begin to complicate the geographies of early modern pe…

  • The Pennyles Pilgrimage of John Taylor

    Open Access•Julie Sanders•ARTICLE•Rural History•2013•References: 5

In this article I ask what it means for cartographical, social, economic and political understandings of poverty and mobility when the ‘geography of vagrancy’, as A. L. Beier termed it, is re-staged and reconfigured in specific acts of writing and even specific acts of walking. Invoking a range of public performances as well as print and manuscript publications by recognised literary figures of the day, including work by Ben Jonson and John Taylo…

  • Broken Harmony

    Julie Sanders•ARTICLE•Music and Letters•2012

Titles for monographs are a tricky business. Publishers, understandably exercised by the unpredictability of the marketplace, look for the stripped back and simplified title that is friendly to the search engine; their desire for the straightforward often stands in contrast to the fondness of the academic community for quasi-poetic titles, often fashioned from direct quotation. Any book that has ‘Shakespeare’ in the title is, of course, likely to…

  • Musicking Shakespeare

    Julie Sanders•ARTICLE•Music and Letters•2008

In the fields of literary criticism and cultural studies, research into the cultural adaptations and appropriations of the Shakespearean canon across a wide range of time periods, genres, and mediums is steadily gaining credence as a genuine site of scholarly endeavour. In his introduction to the recently published The Cambridge Companion to Shakespeare and Popular Culture (Cambridge, 2007), that collection's editor, Robert Shaughnessy, declares …
