  • Negotiating the 'Holy Land

    Peter Otto•ARTICLE•Postcolonial Studies•2020

Napoleon's invasion of Egypt, launched in 1798, is closely linked to the birth of modern Orientalism, which Edward Said describes as the disciplines through which ‘the Orient was reconstructed' in forms that brought it ‘closer to Europe'. But it can also be linked to what Édouard Glissant calls ‘the restlessness of the same disturbed by the other'. This perturbation is the primary object of this essay, which I explore through works by Robert Ker …

  • Are We the Future of the Past?’

    Open Access•Peter Otto•ARTICLE•Australian Literary Studies•2011•Cited by: 1

â Peter Ottoâ s essay â ¦ argues that the novelâ s temporal frame, and its evocation of a species of Gothicism, challenges conventional periodisationâ (p.4). The author argues that â the space of engagement conjured by our â ¦ slow reading of An Imaginary Life , offers an important allegory of the situation of white Australians. Read in these terms, it suggests just how important it might be for white Australians, temporarily, to resist the urge …

  • Romanticism, Modernity, and Virtual Reality

    Peter Otto•ARTICLE•Australian Humanities Review•2009

Virtual reality is one of the most prominent of the terms used to describe the postmodern world. In the last two decades, there has been discussion of virtual communities, virtual politics, virtual identities, and even virtual realism. Already in 1995 Jean Baudrillard, in an article entitled 'The Virtual Illusion', reported 'the transformation of life itself, of everyday life, into virtual reality' (107). Despite its contemporary valence there is…

  • Rereading David Malouf’s *Fly Away Peter

    Open Access•Peter Otto•ARTICLE•Australian Literary Studies•2009

The authorâ s account of Fly Away Peter is intended â to raise the question of the relation between Maloufâ s closely intertwined narratives of the Great War and the formation of Australian identity and, on the other hand, Aboriginal narratives of dispossession and self-affirmation.â This leads to a consideration of the novelâ s treatment of the Anzac myth and its role as a settler narrative; and to a discussion of the â Ngurrara Canvasâ , painte…

  • Performing the Resurrection

    Peter Otto•ARTICLE•Cultural and Social History•2006•References: 1

In contrast to recent work on the charlatan James Graham which locates him in relation to medical history, this paper focuses on his various performances, the theatrical spaces he constructed (or imagined) for them, and the ‘other’ realities that these spaces and performances were designed to conjure. It argues that in the unprecedented commercial and cosmopolitan milieu of late eighteenth-century London, the charlatan emerges as the uncanny doub…
