The Identity Issue
This special issue of Cultural Analyticstackles the urgent question of how so-cial identities can be addressed through computational methods. In particular, it probes the extent to which large datasets can be used to elucidate the kindsof questions that humanities scholars want to ask about historical and represen-tational processes that structure social relations and positions

Imaging Interiority
Considered together, William Blake's Songs of Innocence and of Experience and William Wordsworth's "Tintern Abbey" suggest how the romantic lyric anticipates photography. Offering up imagery deployed both graphically and typographically, these songs provide a model for the photographer's work of capturing inner states, thereby exploring what printed media up to 1810 could not. In thematizing the loss of sound, both poems produce a sense of psycho…
What Is the Matter? Or, What Literary Theory Neither Hears nor Sees
Concerned with the relationship between sound and images on the printed page, this essay analyzes two poems by William Wordsworth, connecting their cognitive operations to the changes in print technology that affected reading practices of the time. I show in Wordsworth's lyrics a shift in the stimulus that he deploys to evoke sound. The process of code-reading afforded by computers and software reveals Wordsworth's practice of making sounds for t…
Plots of Enlightenment
Plots of Enlightenment explores the emergence of the English novel during the early 1700s as a preeminent form of popular education at a time when educators were defining a new kind of English citizenship for both men and women. This new individual was imagined neither as the free, self-determined figure of early modern liberalism or republicanism, nor, at the other extreme, as the product of a nearly totalized disciplinary regimen. Instead, this…
Authorship, Commerce, and Gender in Early Eighteenth-Century England
Bawds and Merchants
In this paper, I will be discussing how Bernard Mandeville's The Fable of Bees and A Modest Defence of Publick STEWS engender capitalist desires. By first gendering these desires female, these texts can scapegoat figure of woman for morally repugnant aspects of capitalist pursuits. Such scapegoating engenders desire to maximize profits not only by cleaning it off and rendering it morally respectable, but also by eroticizing quest to capitalize on…
