  • Mapping the Ottomans: Sovereignty, Territory, and Identity in the Early Modern Mediterranean, by Palmira Brummett

    Open Access•David S Katz•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2017

Maps are only partial representations of reality, but usually they give us as much reality as we need anyway, like the schematic New York City subway map. Historical dramas also take liberties with the narrative, but they can convey a deeper truth, or at least a truth that suits the audience. ‘Just so,’ writes Palmira Brummett, ‘as early modern Europeans created representations of territory, they employed those same factors to delineate an Ottoma…

    David S Katz•ARTICLE•Common Knowledge•2013

This contribution to part 4 of the Common Knowledge symposium "Fuzzy Studies: On the Consequence of Blur" shows how the reputedly radical position that history is not about eternal truths but about the creative construction of a convincing narrative of past events is not an argument of recent vintage. In the days when postmodernism was a technical term used mainly by scholars of art and architecture-and indeed, decades before then-professional hi…

This book traces the Jewish thread throughout English life between the Tudors and the beginnings of mass immigration in the mid-nineteenth century. The writing of English history has been very largely framed without taking note of the Jewish presence at all — here, for the first time, the Jews are shown as an integral part of English religious and social history. The book explores completely new subjects in depth, such as the Jewish advocates of …

  • The Phenomenon of Philo-Semitism

    Open Access•David S Katz•ARTICLE•Studies in Church History•1992•Cited by: 2•References: 13

No One would accuse Martin Luther of being philo-Semitic. Even his first, so-called pro-Jewish pamphlet to the Jews is tentative in the extreme and conditional on their accepting Christianity in its purer Protestant form. But even he could not disguise his admiration for the Jews in two areas. The first was sheer survival. The Jews are the poorest people among all nations on earth [he said], they are plagued every where, scattered to and fro in a…

  • The marginalization of early modern Anglo‐Jewish history

    David S Katz•ARTICLE•Immigrants & Minorities•1991•References: 7

The history of early modern Anglo‐Jewry has suffered from a dual disability: English historians often pass over Jewish themes, while at the same time Anglo‐Jewish historiography has been excessively patriotic, conservative, and ‘Whig’, that is, ends‐oriented, the ‘End of Anglo‐Jewish History’ being Emancipation. These tendencies can be illustrated by examining three specific examples: (1) a ‘Christian’ subject whose ‘Jewish’ component has been le…

This book is a study of the practical application of a religious idea: the belief in the continuing validity of the Old Testament, especially the Ten Commandments, which ordained the observance of the Sabbath on the seventh day, Saturday. The author traces the growth and development of the most radical of English Sabbath observers, those who revered the Jewish Sabbath in a Christian context. But this is not only a pre-history of the Seventh-Day A…

One of the most striking features of the first decades of open Jewish resettlement in England is the speed with which Jews managed to integrate themselves into so many different spheres of English life. From the first appointment of a Jew as a broker on the Exchange in 1657 to the first Jewish knighthood in 1700, the story is one of a dramatic rise in the acquisition of rights, privileges and special consideration. So, too, had Jews long been a p…
