The Relationship Between Future Self-Continuity and Suicide Risk in Military Veterans with Traumatic Brain Injury
Veterans with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) have an increased risk for suicide. A lack of Future-Self Continuity (FSC), which refers to the sense of “psychological connectedness” that a person has between their present and future selves, has also been associated with suicide risk. For this study, 308 U.S. military veterans, 39 of whom self-reported a TBI, completed a series of questionnaires to assess future self-continuity and suicidality. The re…
‘I loved him. It was quite abusive, like young abuse’
Although largely defined and located as an adult issue, there is increased responsiveness to the fact that girls as young as 13 (Barter et al, 2009) are subjected to similar levels of violence and abuse in relationships to adult women, with comparable, if not greater deleterious effects. However, little is known about how young people understand and make sense of these experiences. This article presents findings from a study exploring girls’ unde…
How long do people stick to a diet resolution? A digital epidemiological estimation of weight loss diet persistence
Objective: To use Internet search data to compare duration of compliance for various diets. Design: Using a passive surveillance digital epidemiological approach, we estimated the average duration of diet compliance by examining monthly Internet searches for recipes related to popular diets. We fit a mathematical model to these data to estimate the time spent on a diet by new January dieters (NJD) and to estimate the percentage of dieters droppin…
H. G. Wells and the Wartime Imagination
No figure is more powerful as a symbol of mass warfare in the twentieth century than the civilian, whose vulnerability on a world scale challenges the moral life of our societies. The story of the civilian has recently become the focus of scholarship on the First World War. This paper discusses some of the wartime writings of H. G. Wells – arguably the most influential and widely-read civilian writer during and immediately after the war, who has …

At the Violet Hour
This book argues that the literature of the early twentieth-century in England and Ireland was deeply organized around a reckoning with grievous violence, imagined as intimate, direct, and often transformative. The book aims to excavate and amplify a consistent feature of this literature, which is that its central operations (formal as well as thematic) emerge specifically in reference to violence. The book offers a variety of new terms and parad…
The Poetry of Pain
This chapter shows how the intertwined elements of rest, anger, grief, and force in the Iliad helped organize later war poetry, discussing some of the shared motifs and principles that cross a spectrum of war poetry. It notes that while it is impossible to historicize pain, it is still possible to outline its poetic forms, and also tries to develop the lineaments of the aesthetics of modern war poetry.
Can You Do That in a Children's Museum
What happens when you bring kids into the realm of civic discourse? Can you do that in a children's museum? This article addresses the issues of conducting meaningful civic dialogue with young audiences, drawing on theoretical constructs of possibilities, critical literacy and citizenship education and describes the application of this information as a model for developing the upcoming The Power of Children: Making a Difference exhibit at The Chi…
