Adolescent Smartphone Overdependence in South Korea
Smartphone overdependence among South Korean adolescents, affecting nearly 40%, poses a growing public health concern, with usage patterns varying by regional context. Leveraging conceptually informed AI/ML models, this study (1) develops a high-performing low-risk screening tool to monitor disease burden, (2) leverages AI/ML to explore psychologically meaningful constructs, and (3) provides place-based policy implication profiles to inform publi…

Contextualized poverty targeting with multimodal spatial data and machine learning in Brazzaville, Congo
Enhancing targeting accuracy in social welfare programs fosters equitable urban development. Advancements in this field harness georeferenced data and leverage AI/machine learning (ML) techniques to predict poverty and allocate aid. However, these models are predominantly developed in areas with georeferenced national surveys and are intended for geographic targeting. We demonstrate that household-level targeting can be achieved in understudied c…

Examining the Effects of the Medicaid Expansion on Social Welfare
The study looks at the effects of cost sharing between the federal and state governments through the Federal Medical Assistance Percentage. Specifically, we research how the enhanced matching rates, through the Medicaid Expansion, affects states allocation of federal funds through other programs. We applied Logistic regression test towards the Medicaid expansion and state spending/allocation of funds towards state programs. Our results indicated …
Impact of Social Media on Intention to Purchase Pay-Per-View and Event Attendance
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) utilizes a unique pay-per-view (PPV) product distribution structure, and relies heavily on social media to promote its events. Yet, no research has examined how UFC fans’ social media motivation influences their consumption. Using uses and gratifications theory and a mixed-method design, this study qualitatively explored the themes of UFC fans’ social media motivations and identified five themes (i.e., inf…
The effect of music on accuracy in the Stroop test
First introduced by Frances Raucher, The Mozart Effect is the idea that there is a transient impact of music listening on spatial‐temporal processing. Researchers have found considerable merit to investigate the phenomena. The field has moved beyond the original claims of the Mozart Effect, with the arousal−mood hypothesis as one dominant interpretation. The hypothesis postulates that a modest increase in performance while listening to pleasant, …
Looking Back on Colonial Korea
This article examines how South Korean director Park Chan-wook’s 2016 film The Handmaiden (Agassi) retrospects on Korea’s late colonial period by keeping out of reach any unproblematic return to Korean sovereign nationality. Instead, the film keeps the tense suspended in a “futureless” colonial modernity where characters navigate the perceived dead end of Japanese cultural imperiality and patriarchy. This article considers how the liberal cosmopo…
Japanese Melancholy and the Ethics of Concealment in Ruth Ozeki's A Tale for the Time Being
This essay approaches Ruth Ozeki's novel A Tale for the Time Being as an ethnographic text of twenty-first-century Japan and the quasi-events that constitute its becoming. The novel is a melancholy speculation of Japan's meaning within a geologic longue durée of human suffering and unsustainability
