  • The Value of Art for Life

    Open Access•Jill Marsden•ARTICLE•Philosophies•2025

The contribution that arts can make to our health and wellbeing is widely acknowledged in public discourse, with the concept of ‘creative health’ having come to prominence in the UK in the last ten years. This paper asks about the kinds of values at play in contemporary appeals to creativity by exploring the value of art for life from a philosophical perspective. Drawing on Pierre Hadot’s influential work on the ancient philosophical practice of …

  • Mass Observation, Counterculture and the ‘Art of Living’

    Open Access•Jill Marsden, Rebecca Harris•ARTICLE•Humanities•2024

Mass Observation was the most ambitious and controversial investigation into cultural life in Britain in the twentieth century. Buoyed by a democratic spirit yet riven by eclectic intellectual allegiances, the project, in its inception, revelled in contradictions, many of which have endured in its legacy. This paper revisits the early countercultural aspirations of Mass Observation in order to reflect on the significance of these contradictions f…

  • Nietzsche, Nihilism, and the “New Materialist” Thought

Jill Marsden•ARTICLE•The Journal of Nietzsche Studies•2022•Cited by: 1

In this article, I draw connections between Nietzsche's diagnosis of nihilism, his emphasis on the importance of the things “nearest” to us and often overlooked, and methodological issues in contemporary thought. In particular, the connection between “the devaluation of the highest values” and the task of transvaluation gives us a context for addressing nihilism as a crisis of orientation. I argue that Nietzsche's turn toward the “nearest” things…

  • Poetic Connections

    Jill Marsden•ARTICLE•Mosaic•2020

If to be sympathetic to others is a prerequisite for harmonious community, how does this function in the absence of identities in common? In his figurations of sympathy as auto-poetic affectivity, Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself offers a way; exceeding the humanist register on which much thinking about community relies

  • Thought on the outside

    Jill Marsden•ARTICLE•Textual Practice•2018

This paper seeks to establish what is distinctive about Will Self’s return to techniques of literary modernism in his novel Umbrella (2012). Despite deploying narrative styles typically reserved for the depiction of ‘inner’ worlds, Self’s novel seems more concerned with the concept of thought as a stream than with the psychological introspection afforded by ‘stream of consciousness’ narration. Drawing on William James’s founding ideas about the ‘…

  • Orienting Nietzsche's "Nearest Things" in Kafka's Letters to Felice

    Jill Marsden•ARTICLE•Mosaic•2017

Franz Kafka's five-year correspondence with Felice Bauer is marked by an unusual fascination with the practice of writing and receiving letters and with the minutiae of the everyday. I suggest that Friedrich Nietzsche's notion of the "nearest things" illuminates Kafka's letter-writing as an embodied style or "orientation" of thought

  • Trauma and Temporality

    Open Access•Ronald Mather, Jill Marsden•ARTICLE•Theory & Psychology•2004

The authors argue that attention to the Freudian and Derridean concepts of Nachtr®aglichkeit and diff¥erance might challenge the implicit assumption of the linear development of traumatic stress from originary event to presenting symptoms. These concepts raise fundamental questions as to the origin of trauma and its ontological status. It is suggested that the psychical reality of retro-causality necessitates a reorientation of current thought ab…

  • After Nietszche

    Jill Marsden•BOOK•After Nietszche•2002

This book explores the imaginative possibilities for philosophy created by Nietzsche's sustained reflection on the notion of ecstasy. From The Birth of Tragedy to his experimental 'Physiology of Art', Nietzsche examines the aesthetic, erotic and sacred dimensions of rapture, hinting at how an ecstatic philosophy is realized in his elusive doctrine of Eternal Return. Taking inspiration from Nietzsche, Jill Marsden presents the view that adventures…
