A total of 181 valid responses were analysed. Most students (63.0%) viewed their chosen sport as just for both sexes, typically because male and female sub-categories already exist, while 30.4% perceived an advantage for males. Biological factors…

Olympic Winter Games, ‘Cold Sports’, and Inclusive Values
Questions about the definition of winter sports (and what ‘winter’ means) are central to interpretations and understandings of Olympic Winter Games. The Olympic Charter gives the current International Olympic Committee (IOC) definition: ‘only those sports which are practised on snow or ice are considered as winter sports’. This is a very narrow and non-global definition, referring only to those sports that might rather be called ‘cold sports’, so…

Physical Education as Olympic Education
Introduction \nIn a recent paper (Parry, 1998, p. 64), I argued that \nthe justification of PE activities lies in their capacity to facilitate the development of certain human excellences of a valued kind. Of course, the problem now lies in specifying those ‘human excellences of a valued kind’, and (for anyone) this task leads us into the area of philosophical anthropology. \nI suggested that the way forward for Physical Education lies in the phi…
Reid on Knowledge and Justification in Physical Education
Whilst welcoming Andrew Reid's revisiting of the justification debate in volumes 2 and 3 of the European Physical Education Review, this paper takes issue with his claim that physical education (PE) can satisfy the knowledge requirements of 'education' without making claims to academic significance on the basis of propositional knowledge of a Hirstian kind. This is not because PE has no educational significance; but because its significance (and …
