In Northcliffe Jail
A reinvestigation of Iris Barry’s work for the Daily Mail in the period 1925–30. Barry is celebrated as a critic and curator. As a founder of the Film Society in London in the 1920s and first curator of film at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in the 1930s she is a heroine of minority film culture. This article argues that her role in mass film culture has been overlooked. While it has been acknowledged that Barry wrote for the Daily Mail, on…
Voyeurs upon History
This article discusses the collaboration of Stephen Dwoskin and Marc Karlin, both Jewish filmmakers based in London in the 1970s, drawing in particular on evidence in the Dwoskin archive at the University of Reading that reveals Dwoskin's hitherto unacknowledged contribution to Karlin's film For Memory (1984). I demonstrate that this erasure is symptomatic of Dwoskin's treatment by historians of British film culture, and argue that Dwoskin and Ka…
Essays on Fielding Miscellanies
Henry Fielding's Miscellanies , three volumes of poetry, essays, and satires, have never been studied in detail. Uneven in quality, often highly personal, they offer important insights into the concerns and growth of the English novelist. Mr. Miller has provided a reference guide to the First volume of the three, analyzing the writings and the intellectual traditions in which Fielding worked. Included in Volume One are poetry, formal essays, a tr…

The lonely crowd
Stephen Dwoskin and Raymond Durgnat first met in 1966. Both taught in art schools, Dwoskin at the London College of Printing, Durgnat at St Martin's, and both were early members of the London Film-Makers' Co-op (LFMC), founded that autumn. Durgnat first saw Dwoskin's films during the Co-op's inaugural 'Spontaneous Festival of Underground Movies', which was staged at the Jeanetta Cochrane Theatre - attached to another art school, the Central - and…

The Augustan Milieu
The "Whig Interpretation" of Literary History
LITERARY HISTORY iS inevitably the child of literary history-not necessarily in the sense of a naked raid upon earlier materials, but in that any scholar who approaches the formidable task of composing a literary history cannot really escape drawing, for schemata and evaluations, upon his own learned experience, his own past. And that will include the literary histories to which he had been exposed in his own youth. There will of course be change…
