Challenging Embedded Whiteness in Museums
Despite decades of ‘diversity work’ in the cultural sector, there is now an abundance of evidence to show that approaches to diversity and inclusion have not created the conditions for significant and lasting change towards race equity and that alternative approaches are needed (Arokiasamy 2023; Ali and Byrne 2022). In this context, questions emerge around the limitations of current approaches, the ethical issues that arise in equity and diversit…
Museum Architecture Matters
Using a series of illustrative examples throughout, we make an argument for the inclusion of sociological studies of museum architecture in museum studies, as well as advocating a series of methodological positions for future research. In short, the aim here is to provide students of both the museum and architecture with a route into the field - as well as a preliminary bibliography - while making the case for the need for increased engagement wi…
New museum design cultures: Harnessing the Potential of Design and 'Design Thinking' in Museums
What is the current status of museum design research? How has the field progressed and how might we characterise contemporary museum design research? What are the barriers to the ongoing development of museum design and what role might research play in enabling museums to harness their physical, designed forms towards the production of meaningful, active, ethical and ongoing visitor experiences as well as the tangible manifestation of mission? Th…
Civil disobedience and political agitation: The art museum as a site of protest in the early twentieth century
This paper focuses on two examples of political protest which took place in museums in the early decades of the twentieth century: Mary Richardson’s attack on Velazquez’s Rokeby Venus in London’s National Gallery in 1914 and the ‘rushing’ and occupation of the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool by the National Unemployed Workers’ Committee Movement (NUWCM) in 1921. In each of these cases, the museum was selected as a suitable site to make a politica…
Making Museum Studies: Training, Education, Research and Practice
Overview Museum studies, as a concept is difficult to grasp. It is invariably discussed according to the pre-existing narratives which circle around the words and inform opinion, without providing, and often precluding, any detailed analysis of the area of enquiry. This contribution puts forward an alternative reading of museum studies based on an awareness of the varied nature of the work being undertaken under the banner of museum studies and t…
