  • How does the CMIP6 ensemble change the picture for European climate projections

Open Access•Tamzin Palmer, Ben Booth et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

We compare Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) ensemble (CMIP6) projections for seasonal mean temperature and precipitation to CMIP5 for northern Europe, central Europe and the Mediterranean. The CMIP6 ensemble shows increased projected summer warming compared to CMIP5, which was found to be statistically significant in central Europe and the Mediterranean. Precipitation projections for Central Europe in CMIP6 were found to have a strong…

  • Effect of aerosol radiative forcing uncertainty on projected exceedance year of a 1.5 °C global temperature rise

    Open Access•Amy H Peace, K S Carslaw et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

Anthropogenic aerosol emissions are predicted to decline sharply throughout the 21st century, in line with climate change and air quality mitigation policies, causing a near-term warming of climate that will impact our trajectory towards 1.5 C above pre-industrial temperatures. However, the persistent uncertainty in aerosol radiative forcing limits our understanding of how much the global mean temperature will respond to near-term reductions in a…

  • An investigation into linearity with cumulative emissions of the climate and carbon cycle response in HadCM3LC

Open Access•Spencer Liddicoat, Ben Booth et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

We investigate the extent to which global mean temperature, precipitation, and the carbon cycle are constrained by cumulative carbon emissions throughout four experiments with a fully coupled climate-carbon cycle model. The paired experiments adopt contrasting, idealised approaches to climate change mitigation at different action points this century, with total emissions rising to more than two trillion tonnes of carbon (TtC). For each pair, the …

  • The importance of population, climate change and CO2 plant physiological forcing in determining future global water stress

    Open Access•A Wiltshire, Jemma Gornall et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 2

  • High sensitivity of future global warming to land carbon cycle processes

    Open Access•Ben Booth, Ben B B Booth et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2012

Unknowns in future global warming are usually assumed to arise from uncertainties either in the amount of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions or in the sensitivity of the climate to changes in greenhouse gas concentrations. Characterizing the additional uncertainty in relating CO2 emissions to atmospheric concentrations has relied on either a small number of complex models with diversity in process representations, or simple models. To date, t…
