  • Associations between PTSD and psychotic symptoms

Open Access•Hanseul Cho, Woohyung Lee et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Mental Health•2026

Introduction: Individuals with psychosis often endorse a history of trauma, yet the symptom-level interplay between trauma-related and psychotic symptoms is understudied globally and largely absent in Sub-Saharan Africa. We used network analysis to examine associations within and between these domains. Methods: We conducted a network analysis of 807 participants with a psychotic disorder and trauma history in the Ugandan cohort of the NeuroGAP-Ps…

  • The relationship between lifetime trauma exposure and psychosis in a multi-country case-control study in Africa

    Open Access•Anne Stevenson, Misra et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Mental Health•2025

Background: Exposure to traumatic events is a known risk factor for psychosis. Additionally, psychosis may be a risk factor for exposure to traumatic events. There are little data on the relationship between traumatic events and psychosis in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in large, cross-country samples using the same instrument. Methods: In a case-control study, 21,606 adults were recruited with psychosis (cases) and 21,329 adults without any …

  • Cross-cultural equivalence of the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10) across four African countries in a multi-national study of adults

    Open Access•Amantia Ametaj, Christy A Denckla et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Mental Health•2024

The Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10) has been widely used to screen psychological distress across many countries. However, its performance has not been extensively studied in Africa. The present study sought to evaluate and compare measurement properties of the K10 across four African countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, and South Africa. Our hypothesis is that the measure will show equivalence across all. Data are drawn from a neuropsyc…

  • Construct validity and factor structure of the Kessler-10 in South Africa

Open Access•Jacob Hoffman, Qhama Cossie et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2022

The K-10 displays adequate psychometric properties, good internal reliability, and good fit with a unidimensional-factor structure with correlated errors. Further work is required to determine appropriate cutoff values in different populations and clinical subgroups within South Africa to aid in determining the K-10's clinical utility

  • Gender-specific experiences of serious mental illness in rural Ethiopia

Open Access•Senait Ghebrehiwet, Tithi D Baul et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2019

Considerable variation in the gender-specific prevalence of serious mental illness (SMI) has been reported in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In the rural setting of Butajira, Ethiopia, the male-to-female prevalence ratio of schizophrenia was reported to be 5:1. This qualitative study explores gender-specific experiences of SMI and the extent to which sociocultural factors may explain the observed difference in prevalence estimates. Usi…

  • The impact of transactional sex with teachers on public school students in Monrovia, Liberia – a brief report

Lindsey Parnarouskis, Anne Stevenson et al.•ARTICLE•Vulnerable Children and Youth…•2017•References: 3

Access to education has been shown to strongly influence adolescent health across the world, and strong relationships with teachers has been found to lead to better academic and psychosocial outcomes for students. In many low-income countries where adolescents have less access to education and are more likely to experience poor health outcomes, risky sexual behaviors can exacerbate these challenges by increasing the risk of unintended pregnancy a…

  • A mental health needs assessment of children and adolescents in post-conflict Liberia

    Christina P C Borba, Lauren C Ng et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Culture…•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 4

Between 1989 and 2004, Liberia experienced a devastating civil war that resulted in widespread trauma with almost no mental health infrastructure to help citizens cope. In 2009, the Liberian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare collaborated with researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital to conduct a rapid needs assessment survey in Liberia with local key informants ( n = 171) to examine the impact of war and post-war events on emotional an…

  • There’s No Place Like a Refugee Camp? Urban Planning and Participation in the Camp Context

    Open Access•Anne Stevenson, Rebecca Sutton•ARTICLE•Refuge Canada s Journal on Refuge•1969•Cited by: 4

The past half-century of urban studies has demonstrated that the design of human settlements is a potent tool of governance. Active involvement in place shaping has also been shown to be a key empowerment mechanism for citizens and a strong means of creating cohesion in communities. Internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugee camps are a unique form of human habitation, temporary spaces created “between war and city.” Drawing from urban plann…
