Composers in the Middle Ages
Planchart, Alejandro Enrique
Motet in the Late Middle Ages
The book ranges widely over French, English and Italian motets, mostly between the 1310s and the 1420s. About half the material is previously unpublished, the remaining chapters have been revised to varying degrees from previous publications and are now organised into Parts devoted to compositional techniques, Fauvel and Vitry, Machaut, the musician motets, English motets, Italian motets, music for popes and courts. Transcriptions of entire motet…
Artes Novae’
Adhuc sum de numero Antiquorum quos horum aliqui rudes vocant. Sum senex, illi acuti et iuvenes. ...etsi in hoc opere dicturus aliqua sum contra dicta Modernorum ubi obviant dictis Antiquorum, diligo tamen personas illorum. I am now one of the ancients who are called backward-looking by some. I am old. They are clever and young. ...although in this work some things will be said against the opinions of the moderni, where they oppose the views of t…

The Use of Cut Signatures in Sacred Music by Binchois
At the Binchois conference, I suggested that some early uses of φ might be better accounted for not as signs of acceleration but, rather, in certain recurrent and specific contexts, as general-purpose signs with a range of possible significations, some of them only minimally prescriptive. The observation arose from examining a repertory plagued by one particular problem of reconciling available theoretical testimony with musical sense: the music …

Diatonic ficta Revisited
Roger Wibberley in MTO 2.5 has criticized a version I published of the sequence from Josquin'sAve Maria, on grounds that it flouts Glarean's modal classification. Cristle Collins Judd has already challenged Wibberley's construction of mode, and I further deny Glarean's relevance on chronological grounds. The first part of my article restates and revises some of the premises (ignored by Wibberley) which provided the context for my discussion of th…
Early Papal Motets
The fourteenth and fifteenth centuries were perhaps the most protracted period of instability the papacy has ever suffered. For much of the four teenth century the papal residence was not in Rome but at Avignon. During the Great Schism from 1378 there were two popes, one in Avignon and one in Rome. Instead of ending the Schism, the election of a third pope at Pisa in 1409 ushered in a period of threefold division, since neither of the other popes…
