Conditions on Wh-the-Hell Licensing
The unacceptability of in-situ wh-the-hell has been observed since Pesetsky (1987). We investigate the acceptability of in-situ and partially-moved wh-the-hell in Colloquial Singapore English through an acceptability judgment experiment. The results reveal that in-situ wh-the-hell in single wh-questions is unacceptable, but partial wh-movement is able to host the-hell. We argue that this pattern follows from two independently supported components…

True wh -movement and wh -in-situ in one language
wh -fronting questions (as in English) are analyzed as wh -movement while wh -in-situ questions (as in Chinese) are analyzed as LF movement or unselective binding. Optionality between the two types of questions is observed in many languages, however, upon closer inspection, a stream of previous literature argues that only one strategy is truly available in any given language. Cheng (1991) and Faure & Palasis (2021) argue that wh -fronting languag…

Conjunction Agreement and the Coordinate Structure Constraint
A long-standing question in syntax is what role linear order plays in a hierarchical grammar. Phenomena that on the surface show sensitivity to linear order have been particularly illuminating. When agreeing with coordinated subjects with different gender features, participles in Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian (BCS), Slovenian, and other languages allow multiple options including agreeing with the linearly closest conjunct. This pattern motivated an an…
