  • Subject and non-subject ex-situ focus in Dagbani

    Open Access•Samuel Alhassan Issah, Peter W Smith•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2020

This paper offers a description and account of the patterns of ex-situ focus in Dagbani. We show that there are two syntactic strategies for creating ex-situ focus in the language, one involving A’-movement to the left periphery, and the second involving base generation in the left periphery combined with coreference to a resumptive pronoun. Furthermore, we argue that subjects are difficult to move from Spec,TP to Spec,CP in the left-periphery be…

  • Knowledge, Attitudes, and Perceptions Associated With Antimicrobial Stewardship Among Veterinary Students: A Multi-Country Survey From Nigeria, South Africa, and Sudan

    Open Access•Folorunso O Fasina, Lerica LeRoux-Pullen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2020

In African countries, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) issue remains pertinent. Despite this, little efforts have been made to assess the future veterinary prescribers on their knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) related to antimicrobial usage. This multi-country survey attempts to explore the KAP of future veterinarians on stewardship of antimicrobial and identify knowledge gaps. Eight veterinary schools participated from Nigeria, Sudan and S…

  • The syntax of semantic agreement in English

    Peter W Smith•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistics•2017•Cited by: 8•References: 5

This paper investigates the properties of plural agreement that is triggered by collective nouns in British English. Both singular and plural agreement are able to appear with these collective nouns, which are shown to be morphologically singular but semantically plural. Plural agreement, however, is systematically more restricted than singular agreement, appearing in a subset of the environments where singular agreement is allowed. Restrictions …

  • Towards a theory without adjacency: Hyper-contextual VI-rules

  • On the Cross-Linguistic Rarity of Endoclisis

    Open Access•Peter W Smith•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual Meeting…•2013

In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt:This paper proposes that endoclisis is not a direct operation of UG, but can arise indirectly due to morphological readjustments. Much of the discussion centers around the most robust case of endoclisis that is present in the literature, that of Udi. I will show that the endoclitics that we see in this language are not endoclitics in any deep sense, but that they are forced into their surface positi…
