Review of Psychoanalysis and the unspoken.
On the scalar presupposition of Question-Focusing even
Iatridou and Tatevosov (Linguist Philos 39:295–331, 2016) (I&T) discuss and analyze cases where even focuses a whole question (Question-Focusing [QF]- even ) and suggest that it (a) triggers a scalar presupposition that compares its prejacent question to alternatives questions in C, which (b) requires that this question is the least-likely to be asked (paralleling the commonly-used unlikelihood-based presupposition of “garden variety” [GV]- even …
On the scalar antonymy of only and even
Approximation derived from a scalar exclusive particle associating with covert focus
We propose a unifying analysis of two readings – exclusive and approximative – of the Hebrew particle be-sax ha-kol, arguing that under both the particle is a scalar focus sensitive exclusive, expressing a positive and a negative inference, i.e. the truth of its prejacent and the exclusion of stronger focus alternatives, respectively. The difference between the readings is argued to derive from a minimal difference in the overtness vs. covertness…
A revised, gradability-based semantics for even
A novel problem for the likelihood-based semantics of "even"
This paper describes and examines novel data which is problematic for the popular view that the scale in the scalar presupposition of even is based on comparative (un)likelihood or probability. Several theories in the past attacked this characterization of the scale by pointing out examples where even is felicitous although the likelihood-based presupposition does not seem to be met, indicating that the comparative unlikelihood of p is not a nece…
Event Internal Pluractionality in Modern Hebrew
This paper examines the semantic effect of reduplication in a subclass of piel verbs in Modern Hebrew, namely quadrilateral reduplicated roots (QRR). It is observed that the verbs in this class share many properties with pluractional verbs cross-linguistically, and consequently, that a pluractionality-based analysis of this verb class is more productive than its characterization as expressing 'iteration' or 'repetition', suggested in the past. Mo…

Exceptions to Generics
This paper deals with the exceptions-tolerance property of generic sentences with indefinite singular and bare plural subjects (IS and BP generics, respectively) and with the way this property is connected to some well-known observations about felicity differences between the two types of generics (e.g. Lawler's 1973, Madrigals are popular vs. #A madrigal is popular). I show that whereas both IS and BP generics tolerate exceptional and contextual…
