  • The evolution of possessive phrases and the rise of DP in French, Spanish, and Portuguese

    Open Access•Alexandra Simonenko, Anne Carlier•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2022

This paper deals with the evolution of nominal expressions with prenominal possessives in Romance languages. Until now, the prevalent view has been that their historical development follows one of the two diachronic paths: either they stop co-occurring with determiners (French, Spanish) or they start requiring their presence (European Portuguese). One common analysis associates the first case with a transition from a modifier to a determiner sema…

  • Between demonstrative and definite

Open Access•Alexandra Simonenko, Anne Carlier•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of…•2020

This article investigates the spread of the le / la / les -forms in the diachrony of French on the basis of large-scale corpora. It focuses on the issue of their “mixed” distribution viz. the observation that during a long period of time the le / la / les -forms in French do not pattern as either (anaphoric) demonstratives from which they originate (Late Latin ille ), nor as (uniqueness-based) definites, which they end up becoming in Modern Frenc…

  • Agreement syncretization and the loss of null subjects

Open Access•Alexandra Simonenko, Benoît Crabbé et al.•ARTICLE•Language Variation and Change•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 6

This paper examines the nature of the dependency between the availability of null subjects and the “richness” of verbal subject agreement, known as Taraldsen's Generalisation (Adams, 1987; Rizzi, 1986; Roberts, 2014; Taraldsen, 1980). We present a corpus-based quantitative model of the syncretization of verbal subject agreement spanning the Medieval French period and evaluate two hypotheses relating agreement and null subjects: one relating the t…

  • Text form and grammatical changes in Medieval French

Open Access•Alexandra Simonenko, Benoît Crabbé et al.•ARTICLE•Diachronica•2018

This paper presents a treebank-based study of the effect the text form (prose vs. verse) has on the course of two grammatical changes in Medieval French: the loss of null subjects and the loss of OV word order. By means of statistical analysis, we demonstrate that naive estimates of the spread of overt subjects and VO orders give the impression that there is a significant difference between the rates of development in prose vs. verse. By contrast…

  • Decomposing universal projection in questions

Open Access•Bernhard Schwarz, Alexandra Simonenko•ARTICLE•ZAS Papers in Linguistics•2018

Revising a proposal by Guerzoni (2003), we propose to derive universal projectionof presuppositions in wh-questions, where attested, from a family of three felicity conditions onquestion use. Assuming that these felicity conditions can be violated under certain conditions, this proposal predicts a typology of contexts where universal projection can exceptionally beunattested. We propose that this prediction is correct, presenting a family of scena…

  • Factive islands and meaning-driven unacceptability

    Open Access•Bernhard Schwarz, Alexandra Simonenko•ARTICLE•Natural Language Semantics•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 36

  • Semantics of DP Islands

    Alexandra Simonenko•ARTICLE•Journal of Semantics•2015

This article provides a semantic–pragmatic answer to the question of why some definite DPs are islands for wh-subextraction while others are not. While it was suggested as early as in Chomsky (1973) that the key to the problem are differences between determiners involved, there has been no analysis which would be based on independently attested properties of the determiners. This article focuses on the contrast in wh-subextraction between DPs wit…

  • A Late Sarmatian Burial in the Central Donetsk Basin

  • Late Sarmatian Bridle Set from Moldova

    Open Access•Sergey Agulnikov, S M Agulnikov et al.•ARTICLE•Communicationes Archaeologicae…•1993

In 1985 the Budzhak expedition of the Moldovian Academy of Sciences examined a barrow group situa ted on the interflow of Yalpug and Lunguca rivers, 3.5 km to the south-west from village Kazaklia (district Tthadyr-Lunga, Republic of Moldova). There were barrows of different ages found in the group, from the Early Bronze to the Middle Age.The assemblage ex amined in this article was uncovered in barrow 14.After long years of intensive ploughing the…
