  • The Unseen Targets of Hate

Open Access•Zehui Yu, Indira Sen et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Computer Review•2025

Machine learning (ML)-based content moderation tools are essential to keep online spaces free from hateful communication. Yet ML tools can only be as capable as the quality of the data they are trained on allows them. While there is increasing evidence that they underperform in detecting hateful communications directed towards specific identities and may discriminate against them, we know surprisingly little about the provenance of such bias. To …

  • Conceptualizing, Assessing, and Improving the Quality of Digital Behavioral Data

Open Access•Bernd Weiß, Heinz Leitgöb et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Computer Review•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 14

The spread of modern digital technologies, such as social media online platforms, digital marketplaces, smartphones, and wearables, is increasingly shifting social, political, economic, cultural, and physiological processes into the digital space. Social actors using these technologies (directly and indirectly) leave a multitude of digital traces in many areas of life that sum up an enormous amount of data about human behavior and attitudes. This…

  • A Systematic Review of the Effects of AI-Assisted Moderation on Individuals and Groups

Open Access•Zehui Yu, Lukas Otto et al.•ARTICLE•Human-Machine Communication•2024

This review paper provides a conceptualization of AI-assisted content moderation with various degrees of autonomy and summarizes experimental evidence for how different levels of automation in content moderation and related losses of autonomy affect individuals and groups. Our results show that current research predominantly focuses on individual level effects, necessitating a shift toward understanding the impact on groups. The study highlights …

  • AI Psychometrics

Open Access•Max Pellert, Clemens M Lechner et al.•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Psychological…•2024

We illustrate how standard psychometric inventories originally designed for assessing noncognitive human traits can be repurposed as diagnostic tools to evaluate analogous traits in large language models (LLMs). We start from the assumption that LLMs, inadvertently yet inevitably, acquire psychological traits (metaphorically speaking) from the vast text corpora on which they are trained. Such corpora contain sediments of the personalities, values…

  • Individual and gender inequality in computer science

Open Access•Haiko Lietz, Mohsen Jadidi et al.•ARTICLE•Quantitative Science Studies•2024

Inequality prevails in science. Individual inequality means that most perish quickly and only a few are successful, and gender inequality implies that there are differences in achievements for women and men. Using large-scale bibliographic data and following a computational approach, we study the evolution of individual and gender inequality for cohorts from 1970 to 2000 in the whole field of computer science as it grows and becomes a team-based …

  • Visibility layers

    Open Access•Pablo Beytía, Claudia Wagner•ARTICLE•Internet Policy Review•2022

The gender gap in Wikipedia content is a complex phenomenon that comprises several asymmetries, discursive dimensions, and social concerns. However, there is no theoretical framework to organise this complexity consistently. Based on writings by Foucault, Deleuze and Tkacz, we interpret Wikipedia as a 'field of visibility' and provide a framework to systemise its content gaps. Then we use that model to organise the complexity of the content gende…

  • To hón ich imma insistieat

Open Access•Cristina Maria Moreira Flores, Esther Rinke et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Approaches to…•2022

This paper investigates syntactic variation in Hunsrückisch German, spoken in a language enclave in South Brazil over eight generations. The aim is to analyse whether this heritage language maintains asymmetric verb placement, i.e. verb-second in main clauses and verb-final in subordinate clauses, a prominent syntactic feature of German varieties. The analysis is based on a sample of 5000 sentences, produced by participants belonging to two gener…

  • The future of human behaviour research

  • A Total Error Framework for Digital Traces of Human Behavior on Online Platforms

    Open Access•Indira Sen, Fabian Flöck et al.•ARTICLE•Public Opinion Quarterly•2021•Cited by: 20•References: 44

People’s activities and opinions recorded as digital traces online, especially on social media and other web-based platforms, offer increasingly informative pictures of the public. They promise to allow inferences about populations beyond the users of the platforms on which the traces are recorded, representing real potential for the social sciences and a complement to survey-based research. But the use of digital traces brings its own complexiti…

  • Bias in data‐driven artificial intelligence systems—An introductory survey

Open Access•Eirini Ntoutsi, Pavlos Fafalios et al.•ARTICLE•WIREs Data Mining and Knowledge…•2020

Artificial Intelligence (AI)‐based systems are widely employed nowadays to make decisions that have far‐reaching impact on individuals and society. Their decisions might affect everyone, everywhere, and anytime, entailing concerns about potential human rights issues. Therefore, it is necessary to move beyond traditional AI algorithms optimized for predictive performance and embed ethical and legal principles in their design, training, and deploym…

  • When Politicians Talk

Open Access•Haiko Lietz, Claudia Wagner et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the International…•2014

Assessing political conversations in social media requires a deeper understanding of the underlying practices and styles that drive these conversations. In this paper, we present a computational approach for assessing online conversational practices of political parties. Following a deductive approach, we devise a number of quantitative measures from a discussion of theoretical constructs in sociological theory. The resulting measures make differ…

  • A Collection of Classical and Eastern Intaglios, Rings and Cameos

Claudia Wagner, J Boardman•BOOK•A collection of classical and…•2003•Cited by: 4

This volume presents a selection from a large private collection of engraved gems, finger rings and cylinder seals. It was created from 1921 through the 1960s from various sources, and includes many examples from old collections that had come on to the market, notably the Evans, Southesk, and (for later gems) Poniatowski, as well as many purchased from dealers and in auctions. They are now in the possession of the collector's son, who encouraged …
