Open Access•Michael Hunter, Michael L Hunter et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Multimorbidity is common among middle-aged adults from a general population. Some conditions associated with ageing such as arthritis, bowel disease and depression-anxiety co-occur in clinically distinct patterns and at higher prevalence than expected by chance. These findings may inform further studies into shared biological and environmental causes of co-occurring conditions of ageing. Recognition of distinct patterns of multimorbidity may aid …

  • Canada and the Cyprus crisis of 1963-1964: Two mysteries and a mistake

    Alan James, Alan L James•ARTICLE•The Round Table•2002•References: 2

Although Canada had been a keen supporter of, and a contributor to, the United Nations' early peacekeeping operations, she was at first most reluctant to get involved in the Force which the Security Council decided in March 1964 should be sent to Cyprus. Then, overnight, she became a zealous advocate of participation. These disparate responses seem strange. It is suggested that the explanation for her reluctance lies chiefly in the changing polit…

  • A Commentary on Quintus of Smyrna, Posthomerica V

Alan James, Alan L James et al.•BOOK•A Commentary on Quintus of…•2000

The Posthomerica of Quintus of Smyrna is the only surviving Greek epic that gives a full narrative of the Trojan War between the Iliad and the Odyssey. Book V covers the contest between Ajax and Odysseus over the armour of Achilles, leading to Ajax' madness, suicide and funeral. The book gives balanced treatment to matters of text, language, literary qualities and sources. An introduction discusses the poem's main features. The commentary is punc…

    Open Access•Alan James, Alan L James•ARTICLE•International Journal Canada s…•1998•Cited by: 2

THE FIRST TWO PEACEKEEPING FORCES under the auspices of the United Nations were assembled with remarkable speed. When the General Assembly asked the secretary-general to make plans for the despatch of an 'emeregency force' to Suez in November 1956, within days no fewer than twenty-four states had offered a military contingent. Ten were accepted, and some troops could have been in place immediately. As it happened, there was a small delay before t…

  • International Peacekeeping: The Disputants' View

    Open Access•Alan James, Alan L James•ARTICLE•Political Studies•1990•Cited by: 4

International disputants often have reservations about inviting a peacekeeping body to help them contain or settle their conflict. Either or both sides might worry about certain international consequences of this course. Thus, one side might want to refrain from implying that an international issue really exists; both disputants might be concerned that a peacekeeping body could interfere with their freedom of action; and also that it could furnis…
