Suspension or prioritisation? Exploring the ethics of age-based rationing in adult ADHD services
Debates over how to allocate limited diagnostic resources have become increasingly pressing in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) services. In May 2025, the Coventry and Warwickshire Integrated Care Board temporarily paused National Health Service referrals for ADHD assessments for those over 25 years. The aim was to reduce long waiting times, particularly for children and young people, but the decision has raised controversy over po…
Gender essentialism predicts prejudice against gender nonconformity in two cultural contexts
Gender-nonconforming children face a substantial amount of prejudice, making it important to investigate potential contributing factors. In a correlational study of 253 U.S. Midwestern and Pacific Northwestern 6- to 10-year-old gender-conforming children (Age M = 7.95, SD = 1.43; 54% girl, 46% boy; 77% White), we examined how gender essentialism (beliefs that gender is biological, discrete, informative, and immutable) and gender identity essentia…
Mental health and wellbeing at work in the UK
In this paper we outline and critique legal approaches to poor mental health at work in the UK. We argue that the current legal framework is not ‘fit for purpose’. Overall, the existing framework promotes a problematic model that is ineffective because each element, individually and as part of the whole, fails to adequately engage with the nuanced realities of the relationship between undertaking paid work and suffering poor mental health. It is,…

Caring for adults in the EU
Unpaid carers of adults, as a group, have, until recently, been largely neglected by the EU. While a number of provisions of EU law – including anti-discrimination measures and protections for part time workers – may benefit (some) carers of adults in the workplace, the existing package of work–life balance regulation falls well short of a coherent approach to addressing the needs of this group. Growing concern about a crisis in social care acros…
Mothers' facial expressions of pain and fear and infants' pain response during immunization
The goal of the current study was to examine the relationship between mothers' spontaneous facial expressions of pain and fear immediately preceding their infants' immunizations and infants' facial expressions of pain immediately following immunizations. Infants' observations of mothers' faces prior to immunization also were examined to explore whether these observations moderated the effect of mothers' facial expressions on infant pain. The fina…
