  • Anecdotes on Dr Movius’ Paper

Open Access•Samuel R Wolff, Baruch Brandl et al.•ARTICLE•Buried History The Journal of the…•2024

This note supplements Geoffrey Movius’ paper about Nancy Champion de Crespigny Movius that appeared in the previous issue of Buried History. Some anecdotes are presented, especially as they relate to her participation in the excavations at Samaria in 1933. It is suggested that the person tentatively identified as Eliezer Sukenik in the staff photograph is in fact Nahman Reiss, later to become Nahman Avigad. Reiss’s role in the excavations at Sama…

  • The Archaeology of the Ostraca House at Israelite Samaria

    Norma Franklin•ARTICLE•Journal of Eastern Mediterranean…•2018

In this publication, Tappy deals with the history and local stratigraphy surrounding the 1910 discovery by the Harvard Expedition to Samaria of 63 ostraca, found in 75 fragments. He declares that “the precise archaeological context of the ostraca remains among the most vexing questions for modern interpreters” (35), giving the impression that this publication will provide an answer. It does not. It is, however, a beautifully presented publication…

Jennie Ebeling, Norma Franklin et al.•ARTICLE•Near Eastern Archaeology•2012•References: 8

In June 2012, the Jezreel Expedition team conducted a landscape survey of 3 km2 of greater Jezreel to the west, north, and east of Tel Jezreel in Israel's Jezreel Valley. In this preliminary report, we review the results of previous excavations and surveys at the site, briefly present the types of features we documented on the landscape, and discuss our plans for future excavation seasons. We also describe the results of an airborne LiDAR laser s…

  • Response to David Ussishkin

Norma Franklin•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American Schools…•2007

In this brief response, the author replies to David Ussishkin's comments, reiterating in particular that an analysis of the stratigraphy of Iron Age Megiddo and Samaria cannot be judged solely via the available published material, especially when such has been found wanting, but must also include a consideration of previously unavailable archival material

  • Revealing Stratum V at Megiddo

Norma Franklin•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American Schools…•2006

This article focuses on Stratum V, Stratum VA-IVB, and Stratum IVA at Megiddo. The true nature of Stratum V is revealed, showing it to be an important multiphased city, complete with two palatial buildings, one of which has similarities with the Omride Palace in Samaria. In addition, the existence of a distinct Stratum IVB (VA-IVB) is questioned, and an alternative layout for Stratum IV in the crucial southern area of the tell is proposed

This article focuses on Building Periods 0 and I, the periods that represent the tenth and ninth century BCE milieu, at Samaria. A realistic portrayal of the full extent and economic significance of Building Period 0 is presented, and a raison d'être for the location of the Omride capital during Building Period I is proffered. It will be shown that Building Period I belongs to the Omride dynasty, while Building Period II must be relegated to the …
