    Excavations at Huqoq in Israel's eastern Lower Galilee are bringing to light a Late Roman synagogue, a medieval public building, and the remains of ancient and modern (pre-1948) villages.     In this article, we consider a recent proposal that Jewish settlement in eastern Galilee experienced a demographic crisis in the late third century and first half of the fourth century c.e.     This article enhances our understanding of how the oil lamps found throughout the ancient Near East were used by the ancients. By testing two kinds of replica oil lamps (open and closed), the authors demonstrate that these lamps gave off relatively little light.
