ArchField in Jordan
In this paper, we present ArchField, a GIS data recording solution that has the potential to enable any archaeological project to inexpensively adopt realtime 3D digital recording techniques. The software addresses one of the fundamental bottlenecks in archaeology: the curation and analysis of massive datasets recorded over multiple seasons of excavations. ArchField records sub-centimeter accurate 3D coordinates from total stations and RTK GPS un…
Drones in Archaeology
In late 2013, a joint archaeological and computer vision project was initiated to digitally capture the archaeological remains in the al-Ula valley, Saudi Arabia. The goal of our team of archeologists and computer scientists is to integrate 3D scanning technologies to produce 3D reconstructions of archaeological sites. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) serve as the vehicle which makes this scanning possible. UAVs allow the acquisition of 3D data as…

High-precision radiocarbon dating and historical biblical archaeology in southern Jordan
Recent excavations and high-precision radiocarbon dating from the largest Iron Age (IA, ca. 1200–500 BCE) copper production center in the southern Levant demonstrate major smelting activities in the region of biblical Edom (southern Jordan) during the 10th and 9th centuries BCE. Stratified radiocarbon samples and artifacts were recorded with precise digital surveying tools linked to a geographic information system developed to control on-site spa…
The Iron Age Pottery from Khirbat en-Nahas, Jordan
The 2002 excavations at the Iron Age copper metal production center of Khirbat en-Nahas have sparked lively scholarly debate concerning the dating of the Iron Age in southern Jordan as well as the processes that led to the rise of the biblical/historical kingdom of Edom. Until now, the important ceramic data from these excavations have been lacking in this debate. Here, the first detailed preliminary analysis of the Iron Age ceramic assemblage fr…

Was Shakespeare a Theologian
“His poetry, unless we are willing to follow the allegorizers in reading Christian meanings into it, is frankly humanistic. But it is a humanism which has been undergirded by centuries of the Christian tradition. ‘There is another echo in our ears as we close a Shakespearean play,’ wrote P. T. Forsyth, ‘from that which besets us as we lay Sophocles down. It is no less sad, perhaps, but it is far more deep, more rich, more wide and varied in its c…
