  • Intentional, dual purpose of ancient wine presses as cisterns for runoff water harvesting in drylands

    Open Access•Ilan Stavi, Matan Chocron et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Rock-quarried wine presses were prevalent across the Mediterranean Basin throughout ancient times and particularly during the Late Roman and Byzantine ages. Archeological surveys have uncovered many presses across Israel. Overall, a ratio of ~5 m −1 has been recorded between treading floor area (in m 2 ) and volume of collecting vat (in m 3 ). A recent survey of two presses located at the transition zone between the semi-arid northern Negev, Jude…

  • High-resolution documentation, 3-D modeling and analysis of “desert kites”

Open Access•Reuma Arav, Sagi Filin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 11

  • "Use of Terrestrial Laser Scans for High-Resolution Documentation and 3D Modeling of "Desert Kites

Reuma Arav, Sagi Filin et al.•ARTICLE•Near Eastern Archaeology•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 14

Over 3,000 Desert Kites are known in Southwest Asia. However, most are known only by the study of Google Earth images, and the majority have never been visited or surveyed by foot or thoroughly documented. The high-resolution documentation of such constructions is imperative but limited in many cases, due to the harsh conditions and the use of local undressed stones for building. We introduce here the use of a LiDAR scanner and its contribution t…
