Adorno on Actually Existing Socialism
While studies abound on the Frankfurt School's Marxism per se-and Adorno's Marxism in particular-there have been no sustained analyses of Adorno's reflections on "actually existing socialism," scattered, as they are, across his body of work. This essay addresses this scholarly lacuna, arguing that, while Adorno's remarks may not amount to a conventional "theory" of actually existing socialism, a critical engagement with them better illuminates hi…
Vogelfrei: Marx and the Worker in Exile
This essay argues that Karl Marx can be viewed as a theorist of modern exile if we bring together his phenomenological approach to the origins of capitalism in the Grundrisse with his historical materialist insights into “original accumulation” in Capital, Volume 1. Viewing exile in broader, more structural terms—that is, as a condition wherein the worker is perpetually excluded from both “nature” and capitalist society—this essay further offers …

The Kraus Project: Essays by Karl Kraus ed. by Jonathan Franzen (review)
Rarely do the worlds of twentieth- century Austrian modernism and twenty-first-century American fiction so explicitly collide. Yet it is this unlikely marriage that we find in Jonathan Franzen’s translations of some of Karl Kraus’s seminal writings: Heine and the Consequences (1910), the afterword to Heine and the Consequences (1911), Nestroy and Posterity: On the Fiftieth Anniversary of his Death (1912), Between Two Strains of Life: Final Word (…
Quoting the Language of Nature in Karl Kraus's Satires
This article focuses on the less "punitive" (Walter Benjamin) dimension of Karl Kraus's notorious practice of quotation: namely, his invocation of nature in its multitude of forms and functions. Rather than advocating a return to a prelapsarian state of nature, as was often the case with his contemporaries, Kraus attempts to endow nature with a de-humanized, non-subjective voice . In so doing, he is able to mount a nuanced critique of the anthrop…
Die verfolgende Unschuld: Zur Geschichte des autoritären Charakters in der Darstellung von Karl Kraus by Irina Djassemy (review)
The late Irina Djassemy’s most recent book picks up where her earlier study, Kulturkritik Bei Karl Kraus und Theodor W. Adorno, left off. Die Verfolgende Unschuld offers, however, a more concentrated analysis of the various ways that the authoritarian character finds its literary analog in the oeuvre of the Viennese satirist Karl Kraus. Djassemy’s essential thesis is that Kraus’s satirical representations during the first third of the twentieth c…
