Open Access•Priyamvada Paudyal, Aghna Wasim et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2025

BACKGROUND: Minoritised ethnic communities in the UK experience disproportionate levels of morbidity and mortality compared to their Caucasian counterparts. This disparity was magnified during the COVID-19 crisis, particularly amongst older adults. An effective way to target such inequalities is through health communication, but language barriers and cultural differences can make this challenging. This study was conducted during the midst of the …

    Open Access•Laura J Hughes, Laura Hughes et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Social Care in the…•2022•References: 3

Quality of life is an important outcome in older-adult care. Measuring resident quality of life may offer ways to improve it and to improve quality of care. However, in the UK quality of life is rarely measured as a part of routine care. Our study aimed to understand the views of care home staff about using a quality of life instrument as a part of routine care in order to support its implementation into routine practice. In a qualitative study, …

  • Measuring adolescent attitudes towards dementia

Open Access•Nicolas Farina, Alys Wyn Griffiths et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 38

The A-ADS is one the first validated measures of attitudes of dementia in adolescents, though further validation is needed. 630 adolescents were recruited from secondary schools in England. A Principal Component Analysis was completed ( n = 230) followed by a Confirmatory Factor Analysis ( n = 400). Reducing the A-ADS into a single factor, 13-item measure (Brief A-ADS) improved the model fit of the measure (χ2 = 182.75, DF = 65, CMIN/DF = 2.81, p…

  • In the Library of Jacques Derrida

    Laura Hughes, Laura M Hughes•ARTICLE•New Literary History•2018•Cited by: 1

Based on research in the Jacques Derrida collection acquired by Princeton University in 2015, this article takes an expansive view of what is considered to be a manuscript through close readings of the material makeup of literary artifacts. In particular, Derrida’s copy of Hélène Cixous’s first book, interleaved with surprising documents, and a handful of small notes Cixous gave to Derrida, suggest that the two writers’ overlapping collections ex…

  • Executive Summary

Open Access•Lisa Simon, Amber Slichta et al.•ARTICLE•The Foundation Review•2014

Improvement collaboratives are short-term learning systems that bring together teams from multiple organizations to seek improvement on a focused topic within the organizations. This article describes findings from four collaboratives conceived and funded by the Health Foundation for Western & Central New York. Findings suggest that the foundation's collaborative model -an adaptation of the intra-organizational Breakthrough Series model for use i…

This article explores the Skillman Foundation’s shift in its approach to fulfilling its mission to improve the lives of children and youth and to making grants – moving from a traditional grantmaker to a place-based investor and change-maker. · Three aspects of Skillman’s approach have directly shaped the evolution of its youth-development investments: recognizing Detroit’s economic, social, political, and environmental challenges; articulating o…

  • Interpersonal Relationships and Social Support in Transitioning Narratives of Black Transgender Women in Detroit

    Louis F Graham, Halley P Crissman et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014•Cited by: 12•References: 14

Social support has been shown to play a key role in overcoming adversities associated with marginalized identities, yet there is a dearth of information regarding the role of social networks in the gender transition process, particularly in ethnic minority transgender communities. This study uses life history narratives, and a modified grounded theory analysis, to explore the impact of interpersonal relationships on the gender transition process …

  • Machaut’s Virtual Voir Dit and the Moment of Heidegger’s Poetry

    Laura Hughes, Laura M Hughes•ARTICLE•Exemplaria•2013•References: 4

As a counterpoint to Machaut scholarship that focuses on the materiality of the book and the professionalization of the poet in the Livre dou Voir Dit, this essay suggests that the immaterial aspects of Machaut’s work can reveal something about poets and poeticity in his time. The narrative disruption and formal interplay that are characteristic of the Voir Dit can be seen as strategies of preservation, and offer glimpses of a virtual book that w…

  • Communication skills in child protection

    Open Access•Donald Forrester, Sophie Kershaw et al.•ARTICLE•Child & Family Social Work•2007•Cited by: 40•References: 3

Communication skills are fundamental to social work practice, yet there is little research on the skills that workers have or how they use them. This study analyses 24 taped interviews between social workers and an actor playing a parent (a ‘simulated client’). Two child protection scenarios with different levels of seriousness were used. On average, social workers asked many closed questions and often raised concerns. They used few reflections a…
