Apathy in Older Adults With and Without Dementia
Despite the detrimental impact of apathy on the cognition, functional abilities, and quality of life of older people, it is often under-rated and under-managed. This integrative review provides a comprehensive overview of the barriers as well as potential facilitators to optimal care for older adults with apathy. A systematic search for relevant literature using Whittemore and Knafl’s framework was conducted to identify factors that inhibit or fa…
Ditch Dwellers
This article examines modern and contemporary literature at the nexus of ecological awareness and extinction. It reads works by Samuel Beckett and Antoine Volodine-authors who do something rare in literature by conspicuously placing their heroes in close bodily contact with the ground itself. The continued belief in a fossil-fueled, extractivist paradigm of modernity is contingent upon a blindness to the extinctions it causes and the ravaged land…

Against the Airport and its World
The international airport is the quintessence of globalized free-market capitalism: there, the conquering of distances, fluid circulation of people and goods, advertising and consumption of products, all come together in a continuous globalized spatial network covering the earth. It is the epitome of the built, contained, climatized, homogenized, and controlled environment: at antipodes, then, with ‘nature,’ in the form of organically established…
Spatial Stream of Consciousness
This article examines Olivier Rolin's use of stream of consciousness narration in L'invention du monde (1993). It draws upon philosophers Peter Sloterdijk and Paul Virilio to propose that the novel—with its obsessions for information, technology, and space—depicts a crossroads of subjectivity. At that crossroads, natural and computational connotations of "stream" collide, fueling the novel's central crisis. The misadventures of Rolin's postmodern…
Empiritexts
-Philippe Vasset, Un Livre blanc …
Writer, Window, World
This article looks at the role of windows in Jean Rolin's Zones (Paris: Gallimard, 1995) 1995. Zones, Paris: Gallimard. [Google Scholar] and François Bon's Paysage fer (Lagrasse: Verdier, 2000) 2000. Paysage fer, Lagrasse: Verdier. [Google Scholar]. In these works, and other contemporary works like them, French authors go to windows in chain hotel rooms and trains in order to find surprising vantage points onto fringe, problematic urban spaces. R…
Prerequisites for Language Learning
Today, as never before, the teacher has access to an extremely wide array of materials claiming to foster language development. The language in this context can mean anything from oral language learning to appraisal skills for English literature. This paper, however, will deal specifically with the acquisition of oral language and can be applied either to a first or second language learning context. As teachers, we will have a personal expectation …
