Refractory Latin
This article addresses a curious phenomenon: the refraction, or back-translation, of Latin texts through the vernacular back into Latin. It focuses on three distinct refractions of the Navigatio Sancti Brendani (ca. 800) via Benedeit's Old French Voyage de Saint Brendan (ca. 1118). Interpolation as Critical Category
Interpolation as Critical Category Hannah Weaver (bio) Abstract Maligned by ancient Alexandrian librarians and twentieth-century philologists alike, interpolation has a long history of negative criticism that obscures its ubiquity and utility in the medieval period. This article first tells the story of criticism of interpolation, using the Latin verb interpolare as a through-line across centuries of commentary. In this vision, the consensus is t…
A Pilgrimage to Purgatory
Telling the story of the exceptional penance of an Irish knight, the twelfthcentury Tractatus de Purgatorio Sancti Patricii contends that it was possible to go on a bodily pilgrimage to purgatory. The Cistercian monk H. of Saltrey wrote his Tractatus at a historical moment when the fate of souls after death felt particularly urgent and important evidence for the afterlife was provided by spirits traveling back and forth between this life and the …
Special Issue of The Medieval Globe
The creative reuse of materials, texts, and ideas was a common phenomenon in the medieval world. The essays in this volume offer a synchronic and diachronic consideration of the receptions and meanings of events and artifacts, analyzing the processes that allowed medieval works to remain relevant in sociocultural contexts far removed from those in which they originated. In the process, they elucidate the global valences of recycling, revision, an…
A Tool for Exemplary Pastoral Care
As the recent bloom of literary scholarship around manuscripts shows, the longstanding desire to correct and emend their lessons has ceded to an appreciation of what we can learn about medieval reading and writing practices from them. This paper addresses the question of genre through three apparently disparate manuscripts associated with the Augustinian canons at Oxford in the early thirteenth century. United by 1300 into a single codex that was…
