Fire history of Fuego-Patagonia
Incidence of late Quaternary fires in Fuego-Patagonia is interpreted from amounts of charcoal (particles 50–150 urn x cm-3) found in five geographically distinct sedimentary sections. The southernmost section (940 cm) is of a mire on Isla Navarino (54°56’S, 67°38’W) in deciduous beech (Nothofagus pumilio) forest. Two sections (760 and 800 cm) are of mires bordering the Strait of Magellan at Puerto del Hambre (53°36’S, 70°55’W) in mixed deciduous …
Cueva del Medio
This article reports the results of the palynological analysis obtained from one of the archaeological profiles exposed at Cueva del Medio, a Paleoindian site located at the southern tip of South America (Ultima Esperanza, Chile). The earliest occupation is located over a sand layer which follows the natural slope of the sedimentological matrix of the cave. The findings of this level are significant, as they demonstrate a clear Paleoindian contex…
Climatic change in Chile at around 2700 BP and global evidence for solar forcing
Palaeoecological and geological evidence for changing atmospheric circulation patterns in Chile indicates that equatorward and poleward shifts of the Southern Westerlies (Pacific precipitation source) were an important factor during Weichselian and Holocene climate change. We focus on the evidence and possible causes of considerable climate change in the Holocene at around 2700 BP, which was associated with a steep rise in atmospheric radiocarbon…
A 50,000-yr Pollen Record from Chile of South American Millennial-Scale Climate Instability during the Last Glaciation
High-resolution (∼≤100 yr sampling interval) Chilean pollen data between ∼10,000 and 60,000 cal yr B.P. exhibit systematic fluctuations in Subantarctic Parkland development. These variations are dominated by a 30,000–40,000-yr cycle similar to that in the Northern Hemisphere GISP2 δ 18 O data and other climatic records. Both Chilean and GISP2 data show oscillations in the 5000–12,000 and 1000–3000-yr period bands. The coherence is, however, gener…

Late Quaternary Vegetation and Climate of Southern Tierra del Fuego
Vegetation and climate over approximately the past 13,000 yr are reconstructed from fossil pollen in a 9.4-m mire section at Caleta Róbalo on Beagle Channel, Isla Navarino (54°56′S, 67°38′W), southern Tierra del Fuego. Fifty surface samples reflecting modern pollen dispersal serve to interpret the record. Chronologically controlled by nine radiocarbon dates, fossil pollen assemblages are: Empetrum -Gramineae- Gunnera -Tubuliflorae (zone 3b, 13,00…
Polar Perspective of Late-Quaternary Climates in the Southern Hemisphere
Late-Quaternary paleoecological and glacial evidence from the higher latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere implies overall uniformity of large-scale glacial and interglacial climatic fluctuations for the past 40,000 yr. Climate of the last glacial maximum, variously dated between 30,000 and 11,000 yr B.P., was relatively cold and dry compared with the warmer, more humid climate of the Holocene and the interstade preceding the last glacial maximum.…

Late-Glacial-Holocene Climate of the Lake District of Chile
Pollen evidence from a 350-cm section of a fen in a moraine belt at Rucañancu (39°33′S, 72°18′W) bears on the controversy regarding interpretation of late-glacial and Holocene climate in midlatitude Chile. Earlier pollen studies, indicating a cooling trend between approximately 11,000 and 10,000 yr B.P., disagreed with observations of glacier fluctuations which show continuous glacier wastage and, by inference, warming after 12,500 yr B.P. and po…
Holocene Sea-Level Changes Along the Strait of Magellan and Beagle Channel, Southernmost South America
Radiocarbon-dated marine sediments from five coastal sites along the Strait of Magellan and Beagle Channel in southernmost Chile permit construction of a curve of relative sea-level fluctuations during the Holocene. Morphologic and stratigraphic data point to coastal submergence during the early Holocene as the sea rose to a maximum level at least 3.5 m higher than present about 5000 yr ago. Progressive emergence then followed during the late Hol…
Holocene Vegetation History of the Prince William Sound Region, South-Central Alaska
Vegetation history during the Holocene is interpreted from the pollen and sedimentary records of nine sections of peat deposits located in sedge tundra at sites in the northern and northwestern parts of the Prince William Sound region. Basal radiocarbon ages of the deposits are between 10,015 and 580 yr B.P. Modern surface pollen data from these and 25 additional sites, ranging from lowlands to an altitude of 675 m in the alpine tundra, were used…
Palynology of Cushion Bogs of the Cordillera Pelada, Province of Valdivia, Chile
Fossil pollen identified in the earliest sediments of three cushion bogs in the Cordillera Pelada (40°10′S, 73°30′W) dated 10,425 14 C yr B.P. includes the subantarctic species Dacrydium fonckii , Tetroncium magellanicum, Astelia pumila, Gaimardia australis, Donatia fascicularis , and Drosera uniflora . All grow today in the Cordillera Pelada and range poleward to the southernmost Province of Magallanes; one species, Drapetes muscosa , included w…
Palynology of the Last Interglacial-Glacial Cycle in Midlatitudes of Southern Chile
Pollen and spores in stratigraphic sections located between 40 and 42°S range in age from the Holocene, through much of the Llanquihue Glaciation, to the last interglaciation. Chronology of the stratigraphy derives from some 35 14 C ages and the age relations of Llanquihue Drift and related deposits. Q-Mode, rotated, principal-components analysis of four key pollen records covering the last interglacial-glacial cycle resulted in four leading comp…

Quaternary Palynology of the Pacific Slope of Washington
Quaternary deposits on the Pacific slope of Washington range in age from the earliest known interglaciation, the Alderton, through the Holocene. Pollen stratigraphy of these deposits is represented by 12 major pollen zones and is ostensibly continuous through Zone 8 over more than 47,000 radiocarbon yr. Before this, the stratigraphy is discontinuous and the chronology less certain. Environments over the time span of the deposits are reconstructed…
Palynology and Depositional Environment of the Río Ignao Nonglacial Deposit, Province of Valdivia, Chile
In south-central Chile, the Río Ignao nonglacial deposit with a minimal radiocarbon age of 56,000 +2000, −1700 yr shows the following sequence of pollen assemblages, starting with the oldest: Gramineae (zone 1), Gramineae- Corynabutilon-Lomatia-Ovidia (zone 2), Nothofagus-Embothrium -Gramineae (zone 3A), Nothofagus -Gramineae-Tubuliflorae (zone 3B and D), and Nothofagus-Drimys -Myrtaceae (zone 3A). This sequence implies an initial dry and rather …
Vegetation and Climate of the Southern Chilean lake District During and Since the last Interglaciation
The palynology of stratigraphic sections from road-cut and gravel-pit exposures and from a fen and sphagnum bogs in the southern part of the Chilean lake district (40° 53′ S, 72°37′ W-41°24′ S, 72°53′ W) is the basis for interpreting vegetation and climate during the last interglaciation and glaciation (named Llanquihue Glaciation) and during the post-glacial. To help interpretation, modern pollen rain was studied in relation to vegetation and al…
Correlation of Marine and Continental Quaternary Pollen Records from the Northeast Pacific and Western Washington
Late-glacial and postglacial pollen stratigraphy and radiocarbon chronology of a marine core from the continental slope and a core from the western Olympic Peninsula, ca. 110 km apart, are compared. Divisible into four pollen assemblage zones (L, P-1, P-2, and P-3), the cores exhibit a succession of correlative zonal prominences: grass-sedge (L), pine (P-1), alder (P-1-P-2 boundary), and hemlock (P-3). Volcanic ash of Mt. Mazama provenance is als…
Environmental Sequence following the Fraser Advance of the Juan de Fuca Lobe, Washington
Stratigraphic palynology and radiocarbon chronology of two bogs and a lake on the northwestern Olympic Peninsula serve to record the environmental sequence postdating the Fraser maximum of the Juan de Fuca lobe. Wastage of the lobe in the terminal area began before 14,460 ± 200 BP. Differential downwasting followed, and the last remnants of dead ice probably disappeared some time before 9,380 ± 180 BP. Ablation moraine became sufficiently thick i…
Palynology and Phytogeographical Significance of a Late-Pleistocene Refugium Near Kalaloch, Washington
A sea cliff facing the open ocean 3 km north of Kalaloch, Washington, and exposing 32 m of interbedded peat, clay, sand, and gravel contains a unique continuous record of late-Pleistocene vegetation and environments on the western side of the Olympic Peninsula. The record obtains from the palynology of plant communities in the unglaciated refugium. Fourteen radiocarbon dates from peat beds in the sea cliff reveal that the record spans the time fr…

Variations of Blue, Hoh, and White Glaciers During Recent Centuries
Glaciers in the Olympic Mountains of western Washington, as elsewhere in North America, enlarged in late-postglacial time and attained positions from which they have receded conspicuously. Former locations of the ice are marked by moraines and overridden surfaces which the regional vegetation is slowly invading. An examination of aerial photographs of glaciers on Mt. Olympus taken in 1939 and 1952 clearly reveals the progress of recession. In 195…
