How China, the ROK, and DPRK Balance Each Other’s Security Interests
This article draws on typological approaches to trilateral relations to construct three models characterising the China–South Korea–North Korea triangle. These models – the confrontational alignment model, mediation model, and limited cooperation model – represent different patterns of interaction within this trilateral relationship. To understand why and how these models evolve, the article employs a level-of-analysis framework that identifies k…
A Show of Strength or Weakness? China’s Motivation for Temporary and Tactical Détente in the US–China Strategic Competition
This paper seeks to explain China’s motivations for pursuing its temporary and tactical détente with the United States in 2023 that culminated in a summit in San Francisco at the end of that year. Against the background of the country’s increasingly assertive foreign policy under Xi Jinping, this paper evaluates two hypotheses for its motivations behind the San Francisco détente: Is China seeking a temporary and tactical détente to repair the dam…
Explaining China’s Cautious Responses to the Strategic Choices of the Yoon Administration
The Republic of Korea has long sought to balance its relationship with the United States and China. While the ROK had once experienced retaliation from China when it tried to align closer with the United States, the Yoon Suk-Yeol administration has made a strategic choice to do so openly without suffering any explicit retaliation of the kind that followed the THAAD dispute in 2016. This paper attempts to explain why Beijing is refraining from exp…
China’s perception of minilateralism and Chinese-style multilateralism
Analysis of China's Strategy on the Korean Peninsula under the U.S.-China Hegemonic Conflict
The Biden Doctrine and China's response
The purpose of this paper is to explain how China is reacting to U.S. foreign policy under President Biden (“The Biden Doctrine”). Using official statements and documents, this paper establishes that “authoritarianism versus democracy” has become the organizing principle of the Biden Doctrine, and that principle is supported by three “pillars”—alliances, multilateralism, and strategic risk reduction. The Biden Doctrine is focused on strengthening…
North Korea in 2021
Continuing the trendline of 2020, North Korea’s key priorities in 2021 were to tighten its belt economically and control the COVID-19 pandemic. Those two goals were related. With its healthcare system no match for such a public health crisis, the government continued its utmost effort to prevent a COVID-19 disaster through the near-complete closure of its borders, severely hampering vital trade with China. As seen in the 8th Congress of the Worke…

Introduction: Music and imagery are often used as stimuli in emotionally focused therapy to induce personal emotions, especially unpleasant emotions, which are related to personal episodic memories. In this study, we designed an fMRI study to demonstrate the enhancement effect of unpleasant emotions by modified guided imagery and music (GIM), which is a music psychotherapy approach utilizing music and imagery. Methods: Music excerpts and verbal in…
