  • Investigating construct representativeness and linguistic equity of automated oral reading fluency assessment with prosody

Open Access•Liam Hannah, Eunice Eunhee Jang et al.•ARTICLE•Language Testing•2025

While the automated assessment of oral reading fluency (ORF) using accuracy and speech rate has proliferated, expressiveness of speech, as measured by prosodic features, has been neglected due to its inherent complexity and lack of technological resources. Despite the potential benefits of burgeoning technology for assessing hard-to-measure constructs such as ORF, insensitivity to linguistic diversities threatens valid score interpretations and f…

  • A mixed-method investigation into international university students’ experience with academic language demands

Open Access•Bruce Russell, Bruce W Russell et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2022

Post-secondary education institutions with English as a medium of instruction have prioritized internationalization, and as a result, many universities have been experiencing rapid growth in numbers of international students who speak English as an additional language (EAL). While many EAL students are required to submit language test scores to satisfy university admission criteria, relatively little is known about how EAL students interpret admi…

  • I Contain Multi-Tudes”

    Open Access•Bruce Russell•ARTICLE•Junctures The Journal for…•2022•References: 2

Since his elevation to the Nobel laureateship, quoting the lyrics of Bob Dylan seems even more apropos to successfully understanding the rubbish which fills ‘modern times,’ and the possible solutions to our current eschatological predicament. In the more-or-less poetic ‘meditation’ which follows, I will use his lyric as jumping-off point for a kind of wilfully Derridean exegesis. My aim is not to attempt to divine what St Bob ‘meant;’ but to use …

  • A Dilemma for Sterba

    Open Access•Bruce Russell•ARTICLE•Religions•2022•References: 6

James Sterba argues that a good God is not logically possible. He argues that what he calls the Pauline Principle, which says that we should never do evil that good may come of it, implies that a good God would prevent horrendous evil consequences of immoral actions. However, there are plenty of examples of such actions in our world. So, a good God does not exist. I offer an example from Derek Parfit, and one of my own, that calls the Pauline Pri…

  • The Effects of Methylphenidate on Cognitive Control in Active Methamphetamine Dependence Using Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Open Access•Reem Kais Jan, Joanne C Lin et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2014

Methamphetamine (MA) dependence is associated with cognitive deficits. Methylphenidate (MPH) has been shown to improve inhibitory control in healthy and cocaine-dependent subjects. This study aimed to understand the neurophysiological effects before and after acute MPH administration in active MA-dependent and control subjects. Fifteen MA-dependent and 18 control subjects aged 18-46 years were scanned using functional magnetic resonance imaging b…

  • Exploring The Realm of Rights

    Bruce Russell•ARTICLE•Philosophy and Phenomenological…•1993

The Realm of Rights is a marvelous book, full of wit and wisdom. After a brief discussion of methodology in the Introduction, Thomson, in Part I, discusses the nature and significance of rights and, in Part II, which rights we have, which we lack and why. I am much in agreement with Thomson's methodology in which she starts from what seem to be clear, even necessary, moral truths and then proceeds to construct theories on the basis of this data. …

  • The Nature of Truth

    Bruce Russell•ARTICLE•Mind•1906

IN a recent work, 1 Mr. Harold Joachim has examined at some length oertain opinions held by Mr. G. B. Moore and myself. I propose first to discuss his arguments against these opinions, and then to consider briefly whether any arguments are possible which ought to appeal to both sides in such a debate.'-The difficulty, as regards the second question, lies in the fact that our differences are so fundamental that almost all arguments on either side …

  • The Teaching of Euclid

    Open Access•Bruce Russell•ARTICLE•The Mathematical Gazette•1902

It has been customary when Euclid, considered as a text-book, is attacked for his verbosity or his obscurity or his pedantry, to defend him on the ground that his logical excellence is transcendent, and affords an invaluable training to the youthful powers of reasoning. This claim, however, vanishes on a close inspection. His definitions do not always define, his axioms are not always indemonstrable, his demonstrations require many axioms of whic…
