Navigating, Selecting, and Engaging
Older adults—individuals aged 60 and above—are increasingly integrating social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram into their everyday information repertoires. Yet, little is known about how they actually interact with information encountered on these platforms. To address this gap, the present study examines which navigation, selection, and engagement practices are prevalent among older adults when using social media for information. …
The price of equality
Out-of-pocket (OOP) expenditures for childbirth in Bangladesh have increased substantially, intensifying financial pressure on lower-income households. While wealthier groups historically bore higher delivery costs, recent trends indicate a narrowing gap in spending across socioeconomic strata. This study investigates the drivers of this convergence in delivery-related expenditures between 2014 and 2022, distinguishing between demographic shifts …
Older adults’ perceptions, needs, and uses of social media and messenger apps as sources of information and news
Older Adults’ Information Use on Social Media
This study explores how basic psychological needs and personality traits relate to the types of information that older adults use on social media platforms. Relying on a nationally representative survey of 1100 German Facebook and Instagram users aged 60+, it examines the relationship between three psychological needs—autonomy, competence, and relatedness—and four types of information use: undirected, topic-related, group-related, and problem-rel…
Information and news use by older adults in social media and messenger apps
With the growing digitization of communication, older adults are increasingly integrating social media and messenger apps into their daily information practices. This article presents a preregistered systematic literature review of English-language publications from 2015 to 2023, offering an overview of how older adults use these digital services for news and information. Existing studies provide insights into the general adoption of social media…
Definite totalities and determinate truth in conceptual structuralism
This article investigates the connection and dependence between the definiteness of the totalities involved in mathematical structures and the determinateness of statements about that structure. From a logical perspective, we investigate whether logical principles expressing the definiteness of totalities license the use of classical logic. From a philosophical perspective, this article provides a reconstruction of Solomon Feferman’s claim that t…
Another Look at Reflection
Reflection principles are of central interest in the development of axiomatic theories. Whereas they are independent statements they appear to have a specific epistemological status. Our trust in those principles is as warranted as our trust in the axioms of the system itself. This paper is an attempt in clarifying this special epistemic status. We provide a motivation for the adoption of uniform reflection principles by their analogy to a form o…
Very Early-Life Risk Factors for Developing Dementia
Improvements to the very early-life environment hold significant potential to mitigate dementia risk. A comparison to the influence of low education on dementia (the largest known modifiable risk factor) suggests that demographic birth characteristics are of relevant effect sizes. Our findings underscore the relevance of providing assistance for births experiencing complications and adverse health outcomes to reduce dementia cases
Human populations are not biologically and genetically discrete
Science relies on the validity of concepts, especially when these come from other disciplines. The differentiation of human groups according to phenotypic appearance, for example the colour of their skin, seemed so obvious that after centuries only genetics could fundamentally revise this concept. For 50 years, attempts have been made to break away from racial categorization, among others in the recent Jena Declaration of 2019 (Fischer et al., 20…
Revisiting Sweden's comprehensive school reform
We revisit a Swedish comprehensive school reform first evaluated by Meghir and Palme (2005). This reform increased years of schooling and abolished tracking. We extend the original analysis to the full population and introduce an improved education measure. Our results confirm the original overall finding of small average earnings effects. However, we find considerably larger increases in educational attainment and no evidence of decreased labor …
Is the Hype about strength warranted
In comparing classical and non-classical solutions to the semantic paradoxes arguments relying on strength have been influential. In this paper I argue that non-classical solutions should preserve the proof-theoretic strength of classical solutions. Leitgeb’s logic of HYPE is then presented as an interesting possibility to strengthen FDE with a suitable conditional. It is shown that HYPE allows for a non-classical Kripkean theory of truth, called…
Europeanisation of VET – the Spanish Vocational Education and Training system and the influence of European education policy
The paper discusses the development of Spanish Vocational Education and Training (VET) over the past four decades and the extent to which and ways in which joining the European Economic Communities in 1986 contributed to the transformation of Spain’s VET system. The paper is structured in five sections: the justification of our choice of Europeanisation as a theoretical approach, a presentation of the system prior to accession into the European U…

Effects of Compulsory Schooling on Mortality
Theoretically, there are several reasons to expect education to have a positive effect on health. Empirical research suggests that education can be an important health determinant. However, it has not yet been established whether education and health are indeed causally related, and the effects found in previous studies may be partially attributable to methodological weaknesses. Moreover, existing evidence on the education-health relationship gen…

R2P and the Role of Regional Organisations in Ethnic Conflict Management, Prevention and Resolution
The Responsibility to Protect (hereafter R2P) agendas have established a fairly high threshold for engagement by third parties in ethnic conflict when seen through the lens of direct intervention by means of force or coercion in order to mitigate overt forms of ethnic conflict such as ethnic cleansing and genocide. The absence of regional organisation activity in this area is understandable given the enormous political and financial costs associa…

Shoulder movements during quadrupedal locomotion in arboreal primates
The kinematics of scapula and shoulder joint movements were analyzed in three species of arboreal quadrupedal primates using cineradiography. Our findings indicate that scapular movement is highly important for forelimb movement in primates with this ancestral mode of locomotion. Retroversion of the scapula (syn. caudal rotation or extension) during the stance phase contributes more than 40% to the stride length of the forelimb. Lateral forelimb …
Arboreal locomotion in small New-World monkeys
The postural and locomotor activity and its relation to substrates was observed in 3 Saguinus oedipus, and 3 Saimiri sciureus for comparison, during a period of 10 h for each individual. The animals moved freely in cages of 3.40 m x 3.40 m x 2.40 m (height) on rather diverse substrates. Observations were made according to the focal-animal-method, with combined instantaneous and continuous sampling. They were protocoled in schematic form and video…

Cineradiographic study of forelimb movements during quadrupedal walking in the brown lemur (Eulemur fulvus, primates
Movements of forelimb joints and segments during walking in the brown lemur (Eulemur fulvus) were analyzed using cineradiography (150 frames/sec). Metric gait parameters, forelimb kinematics, and intralimb coordination are described. Calculation of contribution of segment displacements to stance propulsion shows that scapular retroversion in a fulcrum near the vertebral border causes more than 60% of propulsion. The contribution by the shoulder j…
