Effects of extreme stratospheric polar vortex events on near-surface wind gusts across Europe
Extreme stratospheric polar vortex (SPV) events can influence winter tropospheric circulation for up to 60 d. Their impacts on air temperature have been extensively studied recently. However, there is a research gap in their effects on wind speeds and its extremes. This study aims to evaluate, for the first time, the impacts of such extreme SPV events on observed and modelled near-surface wind gusts across Europe. We have analysed wind gust data …
Global assessment of spatiotemporal changes of frequency of terrestrial wind speed
Wind energy, an important component of clean energy, is highly dictated by the disposable wind speed within the working regime of wind turbines (typically between 3 and 25 m s −1 at the hub height). Following a continuous reduction (‘stilling’) of global annual mean surface wind speed (SWS) since the 1960s, recently, researchers have reported a ‘reversal’ since 2011. However, little attention has been paid to the evolution of the effective wind s…
On the effect of reference periods on trends in percentile-based extreme temperature indices
A number of studies have noted that the use of distinct reference periods when comparing indices measuring the frequency of days exceeding a particular temperature percentile threshold leads to apparently different behaviour. We show that these differences arise because of the interplay between the increasing temperatures and the choice of reference period. The time series of the indicators calculated using the different reference periods are off…
On the use of indices to study extreme precipitation on sub-daily and daily timescales
While there are obstacles to the exchange of long-term high temporal resolution precipitation data, there have been fewer barriers to the exchange of so-called 'indices'. These are derived from daily and sub-daily data and measure aspects of precipitation frequency, duration and intensity that could be used for the study of extremes. This paper outlines the history of the rationale and use of these indices, the types of indices that are frequentl…
Analysis of heat stress in UK dairy cattle and impact on milk yields
Much as humans suffer from heat-stress during periods of high temperature and humidity, so do dairy cattle. Using a temperature-humidity index (THI), we investigate the effect of past heatwaves in the UK on heat-stress in dairy herds. Daily THI data derived from routine meteorological observations show that during the summer, there has been an average of typically 1 day per year per station over the past 40 years when the THI has exceeded the thr…
Updated analyses of temperature and precipitation extreme indices since the beginning of the twentieth century
In this study, we present the collation and analysis of the gridded land‐based dataset of indices of temperature and precipitation extremes: HadEX2. Indices were calculated based on station data using a consistent approach recommended by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices, resulting in the production of 17 temperature and 12 precipitation indices derived from daily maximum and minimum t…

The Paradox of the Church Hockey League
We investigated a local church ice hockey league, because it: (a) was specifically created for the playing of hockey according to 'Christian' values and expectations; (b) consisted of eight teams from evangelical churches, which led us to presuppose an explicit expectation for the integration of the Christian faith into all aspects of life, including sport; and (c) presented an implict paradox between the nature of the game and the practice of th…
