Assessment of solar PV-assisted domestic water heating in Sub-Saharan African cities
Water heating accounts for 40%–50% of total household electricity consumption in Sub-Saharan Africa, placing significant strain on national grids and contributing substantially to CO 2 emissions. This study evaluates the performance of a Direct-DC-PV-to-Electric Water Heater (EWH) system, a mechanically simple, retrofit-compatible configuration that eliminates the need for inverters, batteries, or hydraulic components, across seven major Sub-Saha…
Agent-based simulation of electric minibus taxis
Paratransit is the dominant mode of public transport in much of sub-Saharan Africa, yet its electrification is complicated by decentralised operations, adaptive driver behaviour, and limited charging infrastructure. This paper presents a modular agent-based simulation framework for electric minibus taxis that explicitly represents driver route, stopping, and charging decisions using discrete choice and opportunity-cost concepts. The model is cali…
A sustainable transition to electric minibus taxis in Cape Town’s paratransit
Lifting the unseen smokescreen on indoor air quality due to amenity indoor fireplaces in South African homes
South Africa’s fondness for fire is not limited to barbecuing. With poorly insulated homes and electricity scarcity, the practice of burning wood to heat homes extends across all income groups. In higher-income groups, these fireplaces are used for comfort and ambience and are typically open, but some are enclosed, slow-combustion stoves of varying quality. According to the World Health Organisation, prolonged exposure to particulate matter, spec…
Uneven transitions and disparate mobility patterns for South Africa’s electric paratransit
The electrification of sub-Saharan Africa’s paratransit industry is mainly seen in the context of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals around climate action, clean energy, health, and sustainability. However, a vital objective of the transitions is a “just energy transition” through equal access for all in the transition to a low-carbon economy. The transition to electric paratransit may have unintentional and adverse implications on …
Investigating scheduling of minibus taxis in South Africa's eventual electric paratransit
The predominant mode of public transport in South Africa originates from the informal sector, specifically “paratransit”. Vehicles carry up to 23 passengers and are still propelled by internal combustion engines. We investigate the feasibility of using electric vehicles without negating the loss of opportunities by drivers and owners. We propose that scheduling of the electric vehicles is one important cornerstone towards electrification. We deve…
Predicting residential water and electricity usage profiles with a temporal histogram model
The temporal histogram model and synthesiser that is presented in this paper statistically models the unique usage behaviour of electricity or hot water usage for individual residential households. These can be used to model behaviour and do simulations for demand management and planning. The model takes into consideration both seasonal variations and weekday differences and the synthesiser autonomously generates hourly synthetic profiles. We use…

Walking on sunshine
Characterizing the movement patterns of minibus taxis in Kampala's paratransit system
Towards sustainable developing cities
Light-years apart
South Africa’s source of energy in buildings is electricity from a struggling state utility running mainly on coal. But despite the constraints and the high cost, energy usage remains mostly unchecked and poorly managed in schools, whose attention is focused on reducing inequality in educational outcomes. School energy usages have been well studied in many countries but remain largely unexplored in South Africa. We use smart electricity meters to…
Minibus taxis in Kampala's paratransit system
Most cities in sub-Saharan Africa rely for their public transport on paratransit in the form of fourteen- to twenty-seater privately owned and mostly old minibus taxis. The system is often seen as disorganized, unregulated and inefficient. To assess the accuracy of this picture, we analyzed the operations and economics of Kampala's minibus taxi system and its efficiency from the passengers' and the drivers' perspectives, using ‘floating car data’…

Results from a water-saving maintenance campaign at Cape Town schools in the run-up to Day Zero
Enhancing social skills through cooperative learning
The National Curriculum Statement of South Africa envisages qualified and competent teachers to deal with the diversity of learners and their needs in the classroom. One of the needs refers to all learners (Gr R-12) who need to acquire the necessary social skills to enable them to work effectively with others as members of a team, group, organization and community. These skills refer inter alia to: learning to work with others, listening to other…
