  • China's strategic opportunity in the era of ‘America First’

    Open Access•Daekwon Son•ARTICLE•International Affairs•2025•Cited by: 1

The return of Donald Trump and his ‘America First’ foreign policy signals a fundamental reorientation of US global engagement, creating what Chinese President Xi Jinping has called ‘great changes unseen in a century’. Assessing the global landscape as defined by the concurrent US descent and Chinese ascendance, the Chinese leadership views this as a historic opportunity for China to engineer a strategic environment favourable to building an alter…

  • We Are Brothers but Not Allies: The Sino-DPRK Alliance Revisited

    Daekwon Son, Yongjon Han•ARTICLE•Pacific Affairs•2023

It is widely noted that China maintains a "special relationship" with North Korea, which is best epitomized by the Sino-DPRK Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance that the two countries signed in July 1961. However, in the post-Cold War era, the raison d'être of this alliance treaty has been challenged. Against this backdrop, this paper traces China's evolving interpretations of the Sino-DPRK friendship treaty. By investigating …

  • Sino‐DPRK Geopolitical Curse behind Kim Jong‐un's Olive Branch

    Open Access•Youngduk Jang, Daekwon Son•ARTICLE•Pacific Focus•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This study explores Sino‐DPRK relations behind Pyongyang's olive branch in 2018. After several rounds of “war of words” with US President Donald Trump in 2017, Kim Jung‐un abruptly changed his nuclear policy in 2018 by pledging to be committed to denuclearization. This paper argues that beneath the Pyongyang's U‐turn is China's subtle deviation from its traditional geopolitical strategy. After a leadership transition in 2012, China, under Xi Jinp…

  • Evolution of North Korea's Peace Treaty Proposals and Sino-DPRK Relations Behind the Scenes

    Daekwon Son•ARTICLE•Korea Observer - Institute of…•2019

This paper aims to explore the peace treaties that North Korea has sought with the United States and/or South Korea historically and how Sino-DPRK relations have influenced these treaty proposals. By exploring North Korea s various treaty proposals in chronological order and scrutinizing Sino-DPRK relations behind the proposals, this paper argues that North Korea s peace treaty proposals have been considerably opportunistic and situational, consi…

  • Bringing North Korea to the negotiating table: Unstable foundations of Kim Jong-un’s North Korean regime

    Open Access•Daekwon Son, Son Daekwon•ARTICLE•International Relations of the…•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 10

This article investigates the linkage between Kim Jong-un’s power consolidation and Pyongyang’s abrupt return to the denuclearization negotiation table in 2018. It argues that behind Pyongyang’s turnabout lie the three unstable pillars of the Kim family’s rule: a faithful winning coalition, the juche ideology, and Chinese patronage. Upon taking office in 2011, Kim had to debilitate his father’s winning coalition to consolidate his power. With the…

  • Domestic Instability as a Key Factor Shaping China’s Decision to Enter the Korean War

    Daekwon Son, Son Daekwon•ARTICLE•The China Journal•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 3

This study explores the domestic determinants of China’s intervention in the Korean War. Since the war, scholars have produced a large number of studies on the motivations behind China’s intervention in the war. These previous studies paid scant attention to domestic aspects, all of them assuming, albeit implicitly, that Party leaders could readily harness all available domestic resources and devote them to their political ends and that the publi…
