Tolga Ozyurtcu, Jan Todd•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2020

The original Muscle Beach, in Santa Monica, California, is a site that looms large in the historical imagination. At once a hotbed of physical culture practices and a pop culture reference point, the ‘gym by the sea’ is often credited for playing a pivotal role in the evolution of twentieth-century health and fitness. An archive of oral history interviews with key figures from Muscle Beach is probed on how the social dynamics of the mid-century s…

In August of 1983 at the Pan-American Games in Caracas, Venezuela, a multi-faceted doping crisis occurred that overshadowed all other aspects of the games. This essay marks the first attempt to historicize the events surrounding this watershed moment in the fight against drug use in sport. Doping was revealed in three ways in Caracas: by the large number of positive tests that resulted in the first loss to doping of medals in the history of the P…

  • Catching Up or Marking Time? Technology Transfer and Market Fragmentation in Australia

    Open Access•Jan Todd•ARTICLE•Prometheus•1997

Australia was a latecomer to industrialisation, dependent on the importation of ‘foreign’ technology to help ‘catch up’. While such a strategy can lead to entrenched structural dependence, a dynamic variant of product cycle theory suggests that windows of opportunity for genuine catching up are created at times of transition to new technological systems or paradigms. Such conditions arose in Australia in the 1920s with the emerging shift from nat…
