  • Voyages and Beaches

Ian G Barber, Leonard Bell et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Voyages and Beaches•2017•Cited by: 2

What actually happened as Europeans and peoples of the Pacific discovered each other? How have their respective senses of the past influenced their understanding of the present? Open Access•Alex Calder•CHAPTER•Settler and Creole Reenactment•2009

  • The temptations of William Pascoe Crook

    Alex Calder•ARTICLE•Journal of Pacific History•1996•Cited by: 1

The missionary William Pascoe Crook was the first European to make an extended residence in the Marquesas. He failed to make a single convert in the two years he was there but instead risked a ‘conversion’ of sorts in everyday compromises between fitting in with, and preserving his independence from, a way of life he found to be abhorrent. This paper reconstructs the quality of Crook's experience during his sojourn in the Marquesas and reflects o…
