Risk perception of hydrogen refuelling infrastructure among local residents and the general public
This study evaluates risk perceptions of hydrogen refuelling infrastructure among local residents and the general public in Japan and examines the psychological factors underlying these perceptions. The results show that individuals’ awareness of hydrogen-related accidents moderates the influence of emotions on perceived risks. Compared to the general public, local residents perceive a higher likelihood of accidents related to hydrogen transporta…
Public readiness for hydrogen infrastructure in community settings
This study presents a cross-national investigation into the drivers and psychological mechanisms shaping public perceptions and acceptance of hydrogen refuelling infrastructure located in residential proximity. Parallel survey data from Japan, Spain, and Norway were analysed using a multigroup comparative framework. Measurement invariance was established across the three datasets, subject to minor modifications within the constructs of trust in h…
Cross-national examination of facilitators and hindrances to the public acceptance of hydrogen refuelling facilities
Social sciences and nuclear energy practitioners
The challenges of energy transitions, as reflected in current energy-sector research agendas, call for greater multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinarity, with particular emphasis on greater contribution from the social sciences. While recommendations abound on how to strengthen the role of the social sciences in energy-sector research, there is little empirical evidence on how the attitudes of energy-sector professionals might facilitate or constra…
Knowing the unknowns
Emergency management implies making decisions under uncertainty. Though this is a truism, uncertainties faced by different actors during radiological emergencies have not been investigated as intensively as other emergencies and lack a systematic analysis during realistic conditions. Hence, the goal of this study is to identify and analyse the uncertainties that may appear during radiological emergencies. Furthermore, this research explores among…
The revolution is conditional? The conditionality of hydrogen fuel cell expectations in five European countries
Agency and structure in a sociotechnical transition
Despite each level of the multilevel perspective of sociotechnical transitions reflecting a different degree of structuration, structuration perspectives have been little used to help explain sociotechnical change and stasis. Here we show how ‘strong structuration’ can be used to theorise the role of agency in sociotechnical systems in a way that brings together psychological and sociological perspectives. Strong structuration gives weight not on…
Perception of risk from air pollution and reported behaviors
We investigate how public perceptions of air pollution, risk beliefs and self-reported actions to limit personal exposure to ambient air pollution vary across cities. Our analysis also examines the extent to which a number of individual-level variables are associated to self-protective and information-seeking actions due to bad air quality. Data was collected through a questionnaire survey in four cities with a total sample of 1202 inhabitants. W…
