  • Brandesʼ Nietzsche und Nietzsches Brandes. Stationen einer Entdeckung

    Christian Benne•ARTICLE•Nietzscheforschung•2025

The article argues that there is a hitherto unknown reason for Georg Brandes’ discovery of Nietzsche. It describes aspects of their exchange and shows how their correspondence left a mark on Nietzsche’s latest writing. While Brandes in many ways invented Nietzsche, Nietzsche himself actively tried to influence and shape this invention

  • Tolle lege. Embodied reading and the “scene of reading”

    Open Access•Christian Benne•ARTICLE•Language Sciences•2021

This paper explains the theoretical motivation and background for using intellectual and literary historiography as potential sources for the study of reading as an ‘embodied’ and ‘distributed’ activity. It illustrates the theory by way of examples from different periods and cultural contexts. It focusses on explaining the concept of the ‘scene of reading’ and, in particular, the role of gesture in reading and its literary depiction

  • L'essentiel, c'est la contingence

    Christian Benne•ARTICLE•Textual Practice•2018•Cited by: 1

This essay offers a critique of the concept of containing or coping with contingency (Kontingenzbewältigung) put forward by a group of German philosophers and intellectuals throughout the 1980s and 1990s. This group put an emphasis on literature, especially story-telling, for thinking about contingency as a characteristic dilemma of modernity. In contrast to their anthropological perspective, I claim not only that different literary genres, perio…

  • The Philosophy of Prosopopoeia

Christian Benne•ARTICLE•The Journal of Nietzsche Studies•2016•Cited by: 1

Nietzsche's writings are complex polyphone compositions: Nietzsche adopts a multitude of positions and voices, including their specific rhythmical features, through the rhetorical technique of prosopopoeia. This is also the case in his aphoristic books. By interpreting the famous “incipit parodia” from the preface to the second edition of GS, I argue in this essay that Nietzsche actually understands the concept of parody in the ancient sense, whe…

“It is not for nothing that one has been a philologist, perhaps one is a philologist still!” – Throughout his work, Nietzsche has paid numerous tributes to philological scholarship. On the basis of a wide variety of sources, this study undertakes to demonstrate the deep impact of the historical-critical philology in which he had been trained. Nietzsche did not abandon philology in favour of philosophy but openly acknowledged his debt to its metho…
