  • The lead-crime hypothesis

Open Access•Anthony Higney, Nick Hanley et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Science and Urban…•2022

Does lead pollution increase crime? We perform the first meta-analysis of the effect of lead on crime, pooling 542 estimates from 24 studies. The effect of lead is overstated in the literature due to publication bias. Our main estimates of the mean effect sizes are a partial correlation of 0.16, and an elasticity of 0.09. Our estimates suggest the abatement of lead pollution may be responsible for 7–28% of the fall in homicide in the US. Given th…

  • Date of birth and selective schooling

    Open Access•Robert A Hart, Mirko Moro•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 2

We compare the probabilities of selective (grammar) school entry in England and Wales before and after the 1944 Education Act. The Act had direct and indirect influences on the costs of grammar education and on entry‐exam coverage, design and marking methodology. Post‐1944, grammar school entry among children born in the middle of the school year improved considerably. We argue that age‐adjusted group standardized testing was an important contrib…

  • It's Not All about the Economy Stupid! Immigration and Subjective Well-Being in England

Open Access•Peter Howley, Muhammad Waqas et al.•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 31

While much is known regarding the effects of immigration for objective outcomes, relatively little is known regarding the effects for perceived well-being. By exploiting spatial and temporal variation in the net-inflows of foreign-born individuals across local areas in England, we examine the relationship between immigration and natives' subjective well-being as captured by the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ). We find small negative effects ov…

  • Does the Housing Market Reflect Cultural Heritage? A Case Study of Greater Dublin

Open Access•Mirko Moro, Karen Mayor et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2013•Cited by: 6•References: 35

Does the housing market reflect cultural heritage? We estimate several specifications of a hedonic price equation to establish whether distance to, and density of, cultural heritage site is capitalised into housing prices in Greater Dublin, Ireland. We use a very rich dataset of housing and neighbourhood characteristics and include 104 location-fixed effects, which represent very small areas, ensuring the identification of the price effects on si…

  • Income and Preferences for the Environment

    Open Access•Susana Ferreira, Mirko Moro•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 47

Do people care more about the environment as their income increases? In this paper we use a measure of subjective well-being to directly analyze whether the impact of a number of environmental amenities on self-reported life satisfaction varies with income. We find little empirical support for the marginal effects of environmental amenities being larger for the richest
